I have a Western Digital WD30EURS 3TB drive that I use as a data drive in conjunction with a SSD drive for my operating system. Six months or more ago I used the R8.0 automated LinHes install "add_storage.py" to partition and format my data drive to a EXT4 file system. Today I used Parted Magic to run gdisk with the v command on that hard drive. This was the response. Code: Caution: Partition 1 doesn't begin on a 8-sector boundary. This may result in degraded performance on some modern (2009 and later) hard disks. Consult http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/libray/|-4kb-sector-disks/ for information on alignment. Has anyone else run gdisk with the v command on you drives? Also can this be fixed or is it easier to backup and reinstall with R8.2 TVBox |

Thats somewhat amusing as add_storage uses parted to create the partitions. Parted was selected to let it deal with those problems and not have to worry about it. I would say it should be straightforward to move the partition so that it starts on an 8 sector boundry. Moving partitions these days is easy enough, but you might have to shink it some to allow for moving it those few sectors. personally i wouldn't bother with it unless you notice a problem. |
