One thing that has bothered me about the HD-PVR is how hot it runs. I set mine on top of my printer for maximum airflow. This helped, but it still gets very hot due to the fact that the only vents are on the bottom and the feet are only 1/4 inch high.

I decided that lifting the box to allow more airflow was needed and I visited my local hardware store on a quest to find something that would do the job. While searching in the plumbing section, I found some polypropylene pipe plugs that looked promising. I knew the feet attached to the HD-PVR were about one inch in diameter, so I purchased four 1-1/4 inch poly plugs took them home and installed them. I simply put them open end up and set the feet of the HD-PVR into the open end!

My HD-PVR is now noticeably cooler to the touch and the gray color of the poly plugs blends right in with the Canon printer. Hopefully, for less than $5, I have extended the life of my HD-PVR . :D

I have an earlier generation HD-PVR which is totally sealed with a small fan inside. The fan was added to circulate air inside the case I guess. Not very effective. My version also has the small heatsink added to the Ambarella chip. I have just removed the tops of my HD-PVRs and they run much cooler now. I have also disconnected the fan and bling lights.

I didn't go so far as to add a new fan. Here is an interesting blog post with a first generation HD-PVR modification.
