I have an HD video that plays well on my 1.6GHz laptop (VLC), however, the picture stutters when played on my 2.4Ghz LinHES (Mplayer). More details of my system are in my signtature. That being said, I believe that the problem lies with the software and not the hardware and that an Mplayer upgrade is the answer. I believe this is what is curently installed:

Code:
[root@mythtv ~]# pacman -Q mplayer
mplayer 29438-1

Code:
[root@mythtv ~]# pacman -Qi mplayer
Name           : mplayer
Version        : 29438-1

Licenses       : GPL

Build Date     : Fri 24 Jul 2009 08:28:17 PM EDT
Install Date   : Mon 01 Mar 2010 02:20:49 AM EST
Install Reason : Installed as a dependency for another package
Install Script : No
Description    : Famous multimedia player, dev. version, without its GUI

I believe (did not try this yet) the the upgrade from the Arch User Repository would be:

Code:
pacman -U mplayer

Has anyone done this successfully on LinHES without creating new problems? Are there any lesson learned or landmines to avoid? I ask because I have my system in a good working state.

This is just an assesment question, is there a reason you are not using the internal MythTV player?

In your signature you state you have a nVidia graphics card however you have not stated which type. If you have an 8400 or above you can use vdpau which runs perfectly these days.

Also using the internal player it follows your standard remote setup without any changes.

Having used arch for a little while (not recently), updating a package from the AUR is not as simple as a pacman command line. You need to download the build script and then build the package from that.

@girkers, I am using the default video utilities. I thought that the internal MythTV player was for recorded TV. I think that Mplayer is used to play .avi files in the /myth/video directory. Let me know if this is not correct. Not sure how to verify this, but open to suggestions.

My video card is a JATON NVIDIA GeForce 6200, so no VDPAU.

I was hoping that this was simple update that involve issuing the pacman command to download and install the Mplayer binaries and installation instructions.

This will not work. The -U switch requires a path to either the local package file or the URL for the package to be installed.

You can try using the Internal mythtv player as Girkers suggested but if mplayer has issues with it I would guess that the internal mythtv player might as well considering you are still on myth .22. You could try updating to LinHES 6.04 which has myth .24 and newer playback code. 6.04 won't get you a newer version of mplayer though. For a newer version of mplayer you would have to try the beta of LinHES 7.

I have been using the internal player for quite a few revisions and I believe by default it is used over other players. You can set which player files use by associating the file extension with the program you want to use.

So to use mplayer for AVI files you would set the appropriate command line against the file type in the Settings. I can't give you screen by screen but you will find it it in settings somewhere.
