Is the over the air TV file size shrinking on the major networks in the US? Has anyone else noticed this. In the past (over one year ago) a one hour show recorded at 720p.mpg created a file size of 6.5 GB and a 1080i.mpg file around 9 or 10 GB. Tonight I recorded 1 hour 4 minutes @ 720p.mpg with a file size of 2.98 GB and a 1080p.mpg came in at 4.7 GB. Those file sizes are less the half compared to one year ago. Looking at it from a transmitter perspective the larger bandwidth has already been appropriated by the FCC so I see no benefit there. Dos anyone know what is in play here? Is it as simple as the networks do not want to store the larger file size and are using more compression?

Now that you mention it, yes.

I record the "Today" show every day and it used to be 24 GB for a 4 hour show at 1080p. Mythtv It is now showing
the same 4 hours as 16.5 GB.

I suspect the networks have upgraded their encoding equipment, but I don't know for sure.

I found this article written in 2001 on the subject:

If you have a file from a year ago you can compare the bitrate and other parameters of it to one that's current using mediainfo. I don't know if it's in the LH repos, but take a look (Arch calls it 'mediainfo'):

Code:
mediainfo /path/to/file

The PBS kids shows are the oldest things I have and they are all the same. The next oldest show I have is Once Upon a Time from September of last year. It's still 2.8 GB.
