Post subject:  bootsplash+nVidia+virtual console - It will not work

Spent an hour trying to get bootsplash&anim work with my nVidia FX5200 without killing the virtual concole.

When KnoppMyth is autoinstalled with bootsplash, pressing <ctrl>+<alt>+<f1> will give "random" results (wierd colors or black screen). Remember that <ctrl>+<alt>+<f7> will bring you back to X.

Disabeling bootsplash will make the virtual console work again.

So it seems that nVidia users must choose what they like moore :)

It says so in the script that adds the bootsplash(I didn't notice this before I searched hot to enable it again) - /usr/local/bin/add_bootsplash.sh
Code:
Note: BootSplash uses the framebuffer, if you have a video card w/ an
nVidia based chipset, the virtual console won't appears correctly.
Certain devices (VGA to component adapters), may not display the splash
at all.  If you have an issue, you can change vga=788 to vga=normal
in /etc/lilo.conf after which, you should run lilo -v

Researching the issue I found this helpfull list at linuxquestions.org:
Code:
The vga modes are:

If you search the forums you'll find that lots of people ask why they get a black screen or garbled display when they "ctrl-alt-f1".

I'll bet you a good portion of those people are running bootsplash on an nVidia card.

The only place it says that you won't get it to work is in the add_bootsplash.sh, and that's not a searchable source when you're googling ;)

No forum post or FAQ or piece of documentation anywhere hints that virtual console will not work on nVidia cards when you use bootsplash.

I think it's valuable to have such info available so that one doesn't spend lots of time to get it work when you can't.

If I'm wrong. That one can get this to work, then this post should be answered with the solution and the thread moved to another category :) Nothing would be better :)

There is a kernel patch that allows this to work, I haven't been able to get the kernel patch working yet though because I'm retarded when it comes to compiling kernels. If you google for vesafb-tng you will find more info.
