Post subject:  LAN activity on hdd LED

Having a diskless frontend I thought it would be nice to use it's hdd LED for indicating LAN activity.

Googling around I saw other people have had the same idea in the past, but they either had a motherboard with such a header (Soyo I believe) or they soldered an extra LED or header on their NIC or motherboard.

My motherboard (with onboard LAN) didn't have such a header and soldering on a properly working motherboard didn't really appeal to me. So a new idea was needed. Then I remembered seeing tleds (http://users.tkk.fi/~jlohikos/tleds_orig.html) in action. It's a small app that allows for using the leds on your keyboard as indicators of LAN activity. Googling further I found this page which is roughly what I ended up doing:

http://martybugs.net/electronics/kbdleds.cgi

It so happened that I had the same keyboard lying around at work (which died of an od of sugared coffee). I disected it until I had the controller board and cable left. I replaced the three LEDs with headers taken from a broken motherboard.
I chose ifled (I found it's source here: http://pl-task.linux.tucows.com/files/console/network/ifled-0.6.tar.gz) instead of tleds as it allows display both tx and rx activity on a single LED. Now I can see network IO on my HDD LED. This is very useful when the system is not responding right away, plus it gives an indication of what is run locally and what is done over the network.

Most important reason for doing this is that it CAN be done!

Interesting hack! I've thought about adding some LEDs for indicating recording status, like TiVo does, but I'd have one for each tuner.
I think I saw a write-up somewhere that used the parallel port with LEDs.
