Post subject:  Some fixes for a crashing MythTV box

My system was crashing multiple times a night R4V2. Both the Frontend (while watching) and the Backend (randomly) would crash. I had independently checked every component except the motherboard and I was beginning to conclude that that must be the problem. But, first I went to the MythTV discussion area and did a search on the word “crash” and discovered a few helpful hints. Since the application of these hints through item 4 made my MythTV system rock solid, I thought I would post what I found and possibly help others. If any of you have additional things you have done to keep your system from crashing please add them.

1. Back off on any overclocking (I actually underclocked my system)
2. Ensure that no components are overheating
3. Disable automatic commercial tagging (I think this is what fixed my system)
4. Disable ACPI in the BIOS
5. Ensure there are no IRQ conflicts (Note: I don’t know how to check for IRQ conflicts… if someone knows please post the HowTo)
6. Recompile Kernel to remove ACPI support (Specifically for Nforce2 motherboards which I don’t have… but I would have tried this if all of the first 5 had failed.

My System
- Epox 8K7A motherboard--I have had the capacitors replaced due to leakage
- AMD 1.2 GHz Athlon (clocked at 900 MHz)
- 512 MB ram
- Nvidia Gforce4 MX (using SVIDEO out)
- Western Digital 160 GB drive
- PVR 350 (Tuner 15)
- PVR 250 (Tuner 16)
- Home made Serial IR remote control (allows you to program it to use any remote control hence my universal remote works better with this than it does when using the PVR remote sensor)
In slot order
1. Cooling fan
2. PVR 350
3. Empty
4. PVR 250
5. Network card

Just for clarification: users of nforce2 motherboards will mostly need to disable local APIC (not the same as ACPI !!!) which requires a kernel recompile for those using kernel 2.4.x. With kernel 2.6.x local APIC can be enabled/disabled using a boot option.

Why don't the knoppmyth providers provide the default kernel with local apic disabled? I would think that most users are going the knoppmyth route to set up a reasonably dedicated pvr, which should not require local apic in most cases.

At the time, it caused issues w/ nforce 2 motherboards. This has been corrected in more recent kernels.

You could do a cat /proc/interrupts to get a list of all used interrupts
Code:
# cat /proc/interrupts
           CPU0
  0:  868503365          XT-PIC  timer
  1:         13          XT-PIC  keyboard
  2:          0          XT-PIC  cascade
  3:   32953972          XT-PIC  eth0, eth2, usb-uhci, usb-uhci
  4:    1931060          XT-PIC  eth1, VIA686A
  8:          2          XT-PIC  rtc
  9:          0          XT-PIC  acpi
 10:    2013087          XT-PIC  ide2, ide3
 12:     127674          XT-PIC  PS/2 Mouse
 14:   34157986          XT-PIC  ide0
 15:        434          XT-PIC  ide1
