i must say in advance, that i am not really linux guru, so forgive me if my solution is somewhat crappy, but it seemed to work for me:

the folowing problem occured on my system:
after i installed konoppmyth on my computer, i wanted to get back to the setup screen that showed up to change my channel settings.

i hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a shell. i loged in as root and typed
#mythtv-setup

i got an error message "cannot connect to X server"
i tried the same with the mythtv user but i got the same message.

a friend then told me i should enter
#export
and look for DISPLAY
i did not find any DISPLAY in there
so he told me i should enter the folowing:
#export DISPLAY=:0.0
after i did so i could run mythtv-setup as mythtv user.

NOTE: after you started mythv-setup you probably have to switch to X-Widnow manually using Alt+F7 (at least i did have to)

hope this information might be useful to someone,

cheers
pascal

...and if you are not willing to do this all the time, simply add
Code:
export DISPLAY=:0.0

to your /etc/profile file
