If you haven't already installed Mythstream http://home.kabelfoon.nl/~moongies/streamtuned.html (make sure to grab mythstream at bottom of page, not streamtuned) you really should! It is an awesome module. Especially if you like to watch news and music video's from other countries. (Enlightenment is a good thing)
Once you get it installed, here are some tips to finding good streams. The latest version of ethereal (I have ethereal 0.10-5 on my mandrake box) is able to breakdown rtsp (realplayer) streams.
Go to www.vtuner.com (awesome website for streams). If you click on a windows (mms://) link, you really dont need ethereal, just view the link in mplayerplugin. If you click on a RealVideo link (rtsp://) then do this:
Start ethereal before you click on a link. Make sure to enable nameserver lookup in ethereal. After you click on the link wait until the video (or audio for radio program) starts to play. Kill the video, then stop ethereal. View the contents of ethereal log. Look for the RTSP protocols. It will normally be between the 4th to 7th or 8th one down. Most servers have default installation so look for something like rtsp://ip.add.ress:554/encoder/path/to/file.rm After you find this, open a terminal and try it with mplayer from the command lne. mplayer -cache 500 rtsp://ip.address.from.above:554/encode ... to/file.rm If it starts, that is the stream you need. If it doesn't then search some more. It is there, sometimes hard to find. though.
I will also put this on the wiki. Have fun and enjoy mythstream!

Thanks for posting this.
I have installed and enjoyed MythStream, but as you identified, finding and plugging in your streams is a pain.
I wish there were some nifty list just like in iTunes (for example), where (valid and available) streams are automatically organized by type.
I just might have to fire up the old ethereal as you suggested to figure out where they all come from...

I go to vtuner from a windows box, click on the video program I'm interested in, let it launch RealPlayer, then bring up File.Properties.Clip Source to see the rtsp:// url. Then I type that into the myth setup and voila!

handy if you have realplayer handy :-)

I do have one issue, when watching a video, mplayer plays in a fvwm window frame, instead of the area reserved for it in the Myth GUI. F will toggle between a FVWM window and fullscreen (black borders, no stretch), and C cycles through full screen stretch modes.

While this is viewable and usable, it doesn't look that great popped up in a FVWM frame.

Anyone know how to fix this? I couldn't find a player configure command line option in the settings. Is there a .conf file or something I need to have?

Thanks

mythstream is finicky when it comes to shoutcast (.pls) files ...
it doesn't seem to like redirects much such as i have on my hosting server that i run
i just pop .pls files there for simplicity .. but i can't use the domain name ... see example below

http://www.rockzoneradio.com/bob.pls cant connect
shoutcast://www.rockzoneradio.com/bob.pls same
http://keeper.serveftp.com:8085/bob.pls works
same with shoutcast://

must be the way i have things setup on my web server .. but .. i just thought I'd throw this nugget out there incase someone out there was wondering

It's actually MPlayer that breaks them apparently. You can use a .pls file with MPlayer, but you have to use the playlist command line switch "mplayer -playlist http://www.somafm.com/secretagent.pls " rather than just "mplayer http://www.somafm.com/secretagent.pls ". So the trick is to just add the '-playlist' to the front of the URL when setting up the channel in MythStream, because all MythStream seems to do is pass that string right to MPlayer. I played with it tonight some and it works very well with Shoutcast with that little hack.
