yes the flicker control only shows up when you are using tvout. (svideo/composite) and when you use the vga/dvi it thinks you are outputing to a monitor and doesn't show the option.

Having set it to Bob, the picture quality is much better :D However any overlay menus cause this really weird flickery effect, and the tv picture looks like its displaying frames out of order! (hard to describe)

Is there any way to combat this?

Not sure. Are you running with a marginal CPU? Perhaps if it is dropping the occasional frame it will mess things up.

You don't have XvMC enabled do you? Don't do that unless you really, REALLY, need it.

I'm pretty sure the cpu is up to the task(?)

Its a sempron 2800 with a nova-t dvb card

it doesnt seem to be actually dropping the frames, consider a 10 frame section. it looks like it plays as follows:

frame: 2,1,4,3,6,5,8,7,10,9

When the overlay menu's disapear this effect stops and goes back to normal!

What's XvMC and how do i find out if its enabled?

hello!

I am using S-Video out from a VIA MII to a HD plasma tv in PAL UK land and I want to improve smoothness of playback; the scrollbars on SKY sports news are jerky and live sports are unpleasant to watch.

If I enable interlacing using Bob (or any other) then the picture is slightly fuzzy and I'm not convinced that motion is any smoother. Furthermore in order to use Bob interlacing I have to enable VIA XvMC - otherwise I get crazy red flashing on the screen.

Enabling VIA XvMC shouldn't be a problem you may think, except that if I do then the OSD goes black and white. Also, I notice no difference in performance when VIA XvMC is disabled... apart from the audio which gets stuttery, however this is fixed by enabling extra audio buffering.

Any ideas on how to improve performance?
The only changes to XF86COnfig-4 that I've made are to disable DPMS and enable overscan.
