It seems that if you have a USB type remote (Firefly, Streamzap, etc.) you will have problems with the recommended way to start lirc at boot:

update-rc.d lirc defaults


I suspect this is because the USB drivers have not been loaded yet.

I simply added '50' at the end of the line and now LIRC is happy:

Code:
update-rc.d lirc defaults 50


This makes LIRC startup after the USB drivers have loaded.
