Ralph -

I'm in a very similar situation. My R5A15.1 frontend (P3 700mhz) is using the i586 packages, but could benefit from the i686 packages for many of the reasons you mentioned. The frontend in question, however, is the box the the wife & kids use all the time - I certainly don't want to break it.

Long story short - did you successfully install the i686 packages on top of your i586 install? If so, which install script did you use and most importantly, were there any problems?

Thanks -

Allan

No problems encountered at all - have a look at fiete's first post (previous page above) and you'll see that both install scripts are the same, so I just followed that and it seemed to work. No database issues or anything.

Type
Code:
dpkg-query -s 'mythtv'
before and after, and you should see that the 'i586' references next to 'Version' and 'Depends' have changed to i686.

Thanks for the reply - I'll try to find some time and give it a shot. Christmas is always a crazy time of year - and just to make it that much more hectic, I'm remodeling my kitchen...

Thanks again -

Allan

What is the point of having the i586 option?? Is there anyone out there using a pentium 1 to run knoppmyth??

It makes no sense to my why there is an option, and the default is the wrong one!!!

Actually now that I think back to when I installed, it was primarily the fact that 'i586' was the default that made me choose it. I agree that it would be better if i686 was the default, unless of course there are other reasons why it shouldn't be :?:

So because some folks don't know what CPU they have, i586 is the wrong one?! Interesting. Way back when i686 as the default, however folks with i586 class processor couldn't use the CD as a live frontend. In response, I changed the default to i586. For the forseeable future, the default will remain i586.

So basically, i586 is a 'failsafe' default then. Thanks, I knew there had to be some good reason.

Quote from the Pamphlet:

Quote:
At this point, select which package you'd like to install i586 (Pentium class processors, K6, C3, etc.) or I686 (PentiumPro class processors, PentiumPro and above, Athlon and Duron).

The answer to your question would be 'yes'.

On a related note, If I'm installing on an Epia machine, do I stick with i586, or can I go with i686?

Thanks,
mike

I knew I should have been more specific. I've got one of the originals M10000s.

Thanks,
mike

Google is your friend. That is what I'd have to use to find out...
