Not everyone has a 5.1 surround sound systm, or even room for one.

If you have one, you can skip this tip.

Otherwise, if you're using the speakers on your TV then this tip is for you. Speakers in TV are generally of poor quality. Even in high end sets they tend to have limited dynamic range.

One cheap and easy way to enjoy better sound out of your MythTV machine is to add a set of 2.1 speakers. Two small satellites and a subwoofer tucked away behind the set.

I happened to have had a set of Altec Lansing speakers around that I wasn't really using and they had one unique option. They have two 1/8" inputs instead of just win. This turned out to be a great bonus because it mean I could connect both MythTV and my Roku Soundbridge to them at the same time.

My sound quality went up dramatically and I suddenly noticed the richness of the background sounds, the depth of bass and the details of the highs in TV shows. As an added bonus, if I just want audio, I can turn the TV off entirely and still enjoy the sound output from Myth.
