I've found that Knoppmyth attempts to install drivers for my Radeon 9000, but upon trying to start X, it only displays garbled colored lines on my tv. To remedy this, I installed the proprietary drivers supplied by ATI.

I will assume that you are doing an autoupgrade for the sake of this guide.

Before doing the autoupgrade, change to a directory in your /myth directory (like /myth/tmp) and do:

Code:
wget https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run
chmod a+x ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run

this will provide you with the driver install that you will need. The reason I say to do this first is that the X server issue happens before you set up networking so you won't be able to get the driver at that time.

Now do the autoupgrade as normal. After the first reboot, you will see the X server trying to start (garbled colored lines). Type ctrl-alt-f1 . Log in as root and change to the directory that you downloaded the driver into. Then type:

Code:
./ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-i386.run

The install will ask a few basic questions. I used all default options. After the installer finishes, do:

Code:
aticonfig --initial --tvf=NTSC-M --hsync=30-50 --vrefresh=60-60  --ovt=Xv
/etc/init.d/gdm restart

Details on the aticonfig options above can get reviewed by type aticonfig at the command prompt.

Hope this helps someone.

Please go add a link to this posting in the ATI thread that Cecil started to gather this information in one place. Thanks...
