The current version of KnoppMyth R5B7 creates mpg files when it records HDTV programs.

Can those mpg files be played back on a Windows machine?
Are they actual mpeg2 video files?
What software plays them back?

case in point:
I have made some HDTV recordings with KnoppMyth using the HD-3000 card and have tried to play back those files on a Windows 2000 machine.
After transferring the files to the Windows machine hard drive, I've tried playback with several applications.
- Windows Media Player. After it sits for about 10 seconds, you see clean video playing with no sound.
- Cyberlink Power DVD. It plays the file with lots of random garbage in the left side of the frame - most of the image is a solid green color overlay and no sound.

I'm not sure if KnoppMyth mpg files of regular NTSC tv recording will give the same results as the HDTV mpg files.

Yep, the files that the HD3000 records to HD are high-definition MPEG2 files. I believe these are now recorded as transport stream (TS) files and not program stream (PS) files. So check if the thing you're using for playback can (a) play HD resolution MPEG2 files without choking, and (b) play transport streams.

For instance, on the Mac, QuickTime player doesn't seem to want to play back my MythTV HD recordings, but VLC Player plays them just fine.

If the transport stream is being recorded, when I record from a DTV channel with 5 sub-channels, does my recording have all 5 of the sub channels in it?
(example: 17-1, 17-2, 17-3, 17-4, 17-5)
If so, how do I switch between them when I want to playback?

No, it does not. I know that because when I record a subchannel (SD), it'll be about 400MB for 1/2 hr. It would be many times larger if it were also recording the main (HD) channel.
ex: my PBS is split: 16-1 is the HD, 16-2, 16-3, 16-4 are the SD sub-channels for This Old House, etc... My "This Old House" recordings are very small, compared to the HD recordings on PBS HD.
I'm on R5B7, but have been recording TS since November, to correct audio issues with PS.

I did a clean install of R5B7 and have not changed any recording settings. Apparently it records the DTV transport stream by default?
Where do we change between the program stream and transport stream?
What are the benefits of each choice?

I don't think you can choose anymore. PS is being depricated. OTA broadcasts are TS. The only advantage of PS is that it is the format used on DVD's, and more players and tools know how to deal with it. windows media player being one.
