So my quick and dirty proof of concept approach would be to edit the lvm script in /etc/init.d and make sure it does a modprobe sata_nv before the lvm module.

There's even an obvious place for it right up front with the other modprobe calls.

After you make the change, reboot and see if it "just works".

That worked!!

tjc, thanks so much for taking the time to read through all of these post. My kids can now turn the box on and everything works.

The first 4 (non-comment) lines of my lvm script now read:
Code:
modprobe sata_nv >/dev/null 2>&1
modprobe lvm >/dev/null 2>&1
modprobe lvm-mod >/dev/null 2>&1
modprobe dm-mod >/dev/null 2>&1

Adding the modprobe sata_nv was the trick.

Thanks,
Tom

Ok, I had the same problem and these solutions (adding the modprobe into the lvm init script) almost solved my issues.

My problem is that I have one lvm vg that is on sata disks and another on pata disks. After doing this fix, my sata vg works just fine and is setup and mounted appropriatly.

The PATA ones still need configured manually. The odd thing is that if once I am booted, I can manually execute /etc/init.d/lvm start and it picks up the PATA based vg's. Why wouldn't it pick them up when lvm runs at boot up?

If I try and mount the volume after boot either with a mount -a or a specific mount command, I get:

mount: special device /dev/ide_vg/myth_tv_lv does not exist
mount: special device /dev/ide_vg/myth_video_lv does not exist

Then I do a /etc/init.d/lvm start and get:
root@mythbe01:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/lvm start
Setting up LVM Volume Groups...
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Found volume group "ide_vg" using metadata type lvm2
Found volume group "sata_vg" using metadata type lvm2
2 logical volume(s) in volume group "ide_vg" now active
3 logical volume(s) in volume group "sata_vg" now active

And then the mount -a works for all volumes.

Any ideas please? I am SOOO close to declaring my myth project a success. This is one of my last hurdles.

Just a note to say I had exactly the same problem with A30.2, went through exactly the same fruitless log search having decided there was a dependency problem.

Found this thread, and the suggested fix to /etc/init.d/lvm works for me.

thanks,

Hi,

After an HD failure I'm now on to R5D1.

I'm back at this thread because this problem still exists in R5D1 fyi.

cheers,

I've added a note to the directions on the wiki.

Try to automate the addition of that line for all possible SCSI and SATA (not to mention USB or Firewire) controllers is a far bigger and nastier project.

On the LVMHowTo wiki, the standard automated setup is a little unclear as to whether the data in the original /myth is retained. Can this be used to add a hard drive to a non-lvm setup without losing all the recordings? It's a little scary to see formatting the new /dev/vg/myth volume as step 4. Is this a stupid question? :(

You're supposed to do it before there is any data on there. The initial LVM setup procedure will delete any existing data on the partition, which means you need to back it up elsewhere first.

The usual trick is to intervene at the Phase 1 Install -> Phase 2 Setup boundary by using Ctrl-Alt-F1 to flip to an alternate virtual console and log in as root there.
