Using: nvidia-installer ncurses user interface

Post subject:	New NVIDIA Driver 1.0-8762
I hosed my setup last night being dumb, but when I went to reinstall today I noticed that there is a new nvidia driver out. It seems to run better with my 6200, but it's hard to tell because like I said, it's a fresh install to R5C7 so it's not an apples-apples type comparison. One thing, the built in driver update script didn't work for me, but following the directions on the download page did. I couldn't get it to work. Then I tried install-nvidia-debian.sh 1.0-8762 -force It downloads NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run and then tells me: Code: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run could not be extracted and has been deleted. Please restart this script. Rebooted and it looks like it installed correctly. Is there a way to verify what version of the driver is installed?

Did you untar the kernel source yet? and symbolicly link it to /usr/src/linux ? THere is an nvidia install script in knoppmyth that does this for you. Also Nvidia-settings tells you what version your running.. though you need X to view it, so no doing it over putty.

I tried the nvidia install script first and it failed (seems the new driver install runs different), but must have done the untar. Then, I manually installed the package and it worked just fine. L

Thanks so much gr8nash. I did not know I had to do that. Everything installed properly. Also thanks lantz for the heads up on the new version. The 7174 version wasn't working well with my system. Near identical performance compared to the 7174 version. About 75% of my CPU playing a 1080i stream.

I found that the script (install-nvidia-debian.sh) only works for nvidia drivers up-to 8178. All nvidia drivers after that, it craps out. It needs a rewrite. I switched to using the nvidia installer script and it works perfectly. It even runs nvidia-xconfig for you. Here's how: get a shell and login as su or root, cd to your favorite download directory, /etc/init.d/gdm stop wget http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linu ... 2-pkg1.run then execute the script sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run at the end of the process the nvidia installer will restart x-windows for you Eric
