| Post subject: | SATA to IDE convert |
I've seen a place that sells converters that plug straight into the IDE socket on the mbr, allowing you to run a SATA drive through it at full speed (150). It's only £6, so I'm thinking that this might be worth getting so that can do an auto install. I'm also considering buy Linux for Dummies. Surely this would help? Any thoughts/Suggestions? Has anyone else tried using a SATA>IDE converter? |

Be careful that you get what you think you are getting! Around here it's common to see the converter that plugs into the back of your IDE disk drive and converts it to use a SATA controller port on your m/b. Six quid seems like a very good price, BTW, for an adapter of either direction. I agree that the IDE->SATA adapter would make using a SATA drive much easier under KnoppMyth. As far as the supposed speed benefits of SATA, there is nothing very demanding about Myth and hard disk usage, so I don't think SATA has any inherent benefits. But SATA drives do seem more available these days. I DK if "Linux for Dummies" is a good book or not. Our version of Linux is most closely aligned with Debian. Be very careful about using the "apt-get" tool to get updates for the KM system. It is not a good idea, as many of the packages on KM are fine-tuned to work together and you can make s "dogs dinner" of your system easily by trying to update it piecemeal. |
