Hey i keep the newbie questions rolling.. i did in fact search the forum for this for this first....

I downloaded the new nvidia drivers from nvidia.com then i ran the
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run"

it says x server is running and i must stop it. 2 questions.. first what part of the gui is x server if i quit the knoppMyth screen to debian menu (where i cant log on with root??) is x server running then? ahhh i hate no knowing @#$#!!! lol anyway the real question is how to TEMPORILY stop x-server.. the instruction on nvidia.com says to edit the /etc/inittab but i didnt see anything that screamed, comment me out to stop x server.

thanks for the help

well I would highly suggest you use the install-nvidia.sh script rather than the latest nvidia drivers, because they broke some of the tvout stuff. To use the install script all you have to do is ctrl+alt+F1 login and run the install-nvidia.sh script. If you insist on the new drivers you will need to execute the command /etc/init.d/gdm stop to stop the xserver before you install the drivers. then you can start things back up with /etc/init.d/gdm start

If you do choose to install the ones you downloaded.
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
Then read the instructions, you'll have more to do after the module is built...

What did they break with the latest version of the drivers?

I had X working with TV out and the new drivers before I did my latest reinstall.

Of course there were the usual "too red", "too small", ... nVidia TV out issues that require a bunch of tweaking, but those aren't new.

The other issue I had was that the GUI looked awful at 640x480, mostly a problem with the font size it was using...

OBTW - I installed the new drivers by trivially hacking the install-nvidia.sh script to use that bundle, which seemed to work OK.

I can't remember exactly what all it is, but If I remember correctly it's the ability to do overscan. They broke it in the version after the ones included with knoppmyth and they didn't have it fixed as of the version before this last release. I haven't tested or heard of anyone who has tested the latest release.

Yes, it is the ability to do overscan that was broken.
