Seeking some guidence in regards to time keeping. Currently if one is connected to the internet the ntpd keeps the house all together. However while expanding on the dial up area, I find keeping the clock correct is a bit trickier.

Assuming a dial up connection is established randomly and ntpdate -u is ran during that connect time. (or you plug in the network cable randomly to simulate ) Without internet connection, what is the best way to obtain the best stability?

If you set up ntpd properly it should be able to deal with an intermitent connection and by gathering statistical data in the driftfile and gradually be able to adjust the clock so it's needed less and less.

Thanks tjc, somehow I expected your words of wisdom The key here then is as I understand that if there isn't any external reference it is then suppose to look inward?

Currently I am not running ntpd and it seems to wander but it also wandered with ntpd. I'm not sure which wandered worse.

Any hints? I have read some detailed documents from Linux Links & Gentoo Linux Wiki and suspected best is with ntpd running but you said the key word, "properly" setup.

This is the last piece needed for the dial up folks (if there are any) to have their recordings start and stop on time too.
