BTW I have an FX 5200 not a 6200.

Section "Device"
### Available Driver options are:-
# sw_cursor is needed for some ati and radeon cards
#Option "sw_cursor"
#Option "hw_cursor"
#Option "NoAccel"
#Option "ShowCache"
#Option "ShadowFB"
#Option "UseFBDev"
#Option "Rotate"
Option "UseEvents" "True"
Identifier "Card0"
# The following line is auto-generated by KNOPPIX mkxf86config
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "All"
BoardName "All"
# BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Are there any sections from xorg.conf file that I should post?

Hmm. That should have done it.
In the TV playback, make sure that you're using the right options.

"One Field" deint
No XvMC
no vsync.
LibMpeg2

(from memory - wifey is watching "Medium" right now)

Settings were all off but I'm still at 30%, perhaps I should shutdown Fah_core. I did see it drop occasionally to 15%. I'll recheck again tomorrow, I didn't see a setting for xvmc. Did I need to reboot?

Thanks for all your help.

John

As long as you're using libmpeg2, then you're not using XvMC.

The MX440 is not supported past 8776 unfortunately. It compiles but warns that my chipset is not supported:-(..... then seems to provide the 8776 module. So much for any new features from now till I invest in new hardware.

Hi I was having issues (basically was black screen and pegging my dual core 3.2ghz intel) trying to output 1080i using a component dongle so I upgraded to 9746 and added the option to lower xorg usage.

It did lower xorg usage and I could view the recordings but now I get judder . it may be interlacing artifacts but I am not sure because it seems to be when people move quickly and I get motion blur.

I have the opengl sync enable in tv settings playback and in nvidia-settings I turned off vsync in both section as well as blitter. I also put the command "nvidia-settings -l" in my /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh ( i wasnt sure if that is the right place to load the settings on startup or if that is the right command).

In addition to the judder I also get freezes now in the menus with OpenGL enabled vs qt painter.

Finally when I run nvidia-settings I get errors in the terminal screen (bear in mind I have a samsung 19" lcd that I used to test because the backend and slave frontend are the basement and the tv is upstairs). The errors are as follows:

ERROR: unable to display attribute vxideosync to dispay specified on line 49 of configuration file' /home/video/mythtv/.nvidia-setings-rc' (no display connection)

Their are a preceding errors for opengl image, blitter etc.... so this is just along list.

I thought the install went ok. I tried to use the kernel path command that was given however it didnt work. So the installer said nvidia would build the kernel and I said ok. Was that wrong Here are some relevant posts from the installation log here

Put a line like this:
Code:
[startup] {nvidia-settings --load-config-only}

with the other startup lines in /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps

Thanks TJC.

So was my installation upgrade to 9746 correct? Any idea why I get those errors when I start nvida-settings?

Because you were trying to run it before X was started...

Trying to work through this without blowing up my system. Here's the questions I have:

1) Should I do this:
Quote:
OK, before installing the drivers, I ran

update-rc.d -f install-nvidia-debian remove
update-rc.d -f nvidia-glx remove
update-rc.d -f nvidia-kernel remove

2) Would the following apply to non-HD viewing:

Quote:
If you upgrade the driver, I strongly suggest the change from this post:

Lower x.org cpu load dramatically in R5E50 when watching HD
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13550

3) No where can I find where we do a make without a ctrl-c 20 seconds in, should there be a non-canceled make:
Quote:
make
[wait about 20 seconds and then hit ctrl-c]

4) Do I need to:
Quote:
...enabled XvMC?

5) What is the "best" way to:
Quote:
There is an nvidia driver "update" task that runs at boot time which may need to be disabled, since it tends to keep forcing it's notion of the correct driver.

6) Do I need to and what's the purpose of:
Quote:
Put a line like this:
Code:
[startup] {nvidia-settings --load-config-only}

with the other startup lines in /home/mythtv/.fluxbox/apps

Hopefully that is enough.

Yes. That's part of how you get the speedup.

Find the links to the init script in the /etc/rc?.d directories and remove them.
Code:
rm /etc/rc?.d/*install-nvidia-debian

There are more complete directions in a thread around here.

It's highly recommended. It allows you to use the nvidia-settings GUI to tune the display.

Next, on my system at least, I had to at least partially make the kernel again, because certain kernel module scripts weren't in a usable state until you did that. So I did the following:

cd /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13
make
[wait about 20 seconds and then hit ctrl-c]

I think it's enough to use "make oldconfig" here, but I haven't tried it.

Quote:
Now we're ready to install the new driver. The easiest way to do this is the rename the startx script and reboot so that X is not even trying to boot up.

mv /usr/bin/startx /usr/bin/startx.save
reboot

I had a different solution. Since X isn't supposed to start in runlevel 3 anyway (just runlevel 5), I changed the last line of /etc/inittab to:

c7:5:respawn:/usr/bin/openvt -fwc 6 -- /bin/su - mythtv -c /usr/bin/startx >& /dev/null

then I restarted, and now, when I want to shut down X, I use:

init 3
killall xinit

then to restart X, I use:

init 5

If you don't do this, your system will revert back to the old drivers when you reboot.

I'm not sure if removing nvidia-kernel is strictly necessary, but the other two are.

I worked through this, and updated the Wiki page with the distillation of this thread - seemed to work.

If anyone can improve on the page, please update it, it's much easier to work from the wiki than to read and digest all the steps scattered around this thread. If the Wiki is ok, perhaps the original poster could put a link to it in the first post of this thread.
