Post subject: | R5E50 tuner problems |
Sorry for the vague title, I really don't know how best to describe this problem: I am doing clean install of R5B50 on AMD XP2600+ platform with streamzap remote and AirStar-HD5000AV-PCI capture card. Problem: Airstar is detected as 'DVB' type, even thought I want to use it as ATSC on my cable connection, assume this is ok. During MythTV configuration phase it complains: "Card1 (type DVBInput) is set to start on channel 3, which does not exist. Do you want to fix this problem? Yes please No, I know what I am doing" So, I select "No I know what I am doing" then continue with the install. I notice scrolling up the terminal such messages as "channel xyz does not exist" I let the installation continue until complete and then in MythTV I go to 'Watch TV' but it says it cannot tune into anything. Another problem is that if I try to view the program guide it bombs out to KM desktop. I checked my channel lineup on labs.zaptoit and it is correct. NOTE, initially during the install my system was not hooked up to cable. Does anyone know if it is essential to have the system connected to the internet AND cable during the whole KnoppMyth/MythTV install? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I haven't got a clue what else I might be doing wrong. Oh, also I am unclear about the 'locale' issues. I live in Canada and I have read that the way around the problem (such as MythWeather not working) is to set up as a valid US location, then change to my Canada locale later on. I am not sure how to do this, if I go to Setup/Weather it keeps jumping back to the previous screen and doesn't let me change it. thanks, Kevin |

Quote: "Card1 (type DVBInput) is set to start on channel 3, which does not exist.
Do you want to fix this problem? Yes please No, I know what I am doing" At a wild guess, I think this is to do with the "Starting Channel" in the "Connect Source To Input" of "Input Connections" in mythtv-setup. If you go into there and set this to an existing channel, it should remove this. You will need to do this for every source that is in use, for every card. Bruce S. |

Post subject: | Help, cant get my Airstar-HD5000AV-PCI to tune into anything |
Hi Bruce, I think the problem is more fundamental than that, I now realize that there is a general tuning issue with my capture card. I have performed another clean install of KnoppMyth R5B0 and in the MythTV setup for 'Input Connections', 'Scan for Channels', my card is not able to tune into anything! **************************************************************************** Corrected: 14 Jan 2007 I am sorry for any confusion but I have been using only two builds: R5B7 R5E50 (not R5B0!) **************************************************************************** I hooked up my Panasonic plasma to the cable to make sure that cable outlet was ok. Then I checked on my Moto DCT6412 cable box under 'setup' to find out what it had used to tune into the various channels. For my 'analogue' channels it has used QAM64 and for the HD channels it used QAM256 On the basis that my Pana TV can tune into all of the SD and HD channels (without the Moto box) I am assuming that they are all unencrypted. I tried every single combination under the 'scan for channels' menu including: Frequency table: ============ tried 'Cable', 'Cable HIGH', 'Cable HRC High' ATSC modulation: ============= tried 'QAM64' and 'QAM256' I also tried messing about with the ‘Channel Separator’ settings. It doesn't matter what I try it always comes back with 'no signal' listed for every channel. For the s/n it shows around 98%, but for the signal strength it always shows 0% !! This does not make sense to me, surely it should measure some sort of value for signal strength??? I am using the following tuner/capture card: AirStar-HD5000AV-PCI I bought this card because I read that it was being used in the 'KnoppMyth Reference System' so I thought it was my best bet to end up with hardware which would work ![]() Kevin |

Found a post that looked like it could answer all my questions with this card but I am not clear on whether I have to do all this awkward setup stuff outside of MythTV when I am using KM R5B0, does anyone know this? **************************************************************************** Corrected: 14 Jan 2007 I am sorry for any confusion but I have been using only two builds: R5B7 R5E50 (not R5B0!) **************************************************************************** The article I refer to is: HOWTO - HD-5000 Using Clear QAM Cable http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... l&start=60 Kevin |

Not being in the US and not having your cable systems I would assume yes ![]() In the settings for DVB cards in mythtv-setup, there is setting for DVB tuning delay, increasing this from 0 may help, with R5D1 I wasn't able scan for UK DVB muxes, in R5E50, I was able to pick up all the local muxes. I decided to try to carry out the steps listed in the following post .. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... al&start=0 however the first problem I has that there wasn't any 'atscscan' in the R5B0 install! So, instead I did an 'auto install' of R5B7, this went ok but still I was unable to tune in any signals with my HD-5000 tuner card in MythTV ![]() However, with R5B7 I was able to find 'atscscan' in /usr/local/bin, so I started trying to follow the steps documented the above article. I got lots of warning messages about 'Warning tuning failed!', but when I looked on the 'channels.conf' I could see that it had tuned into some channels .. atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf resulted in the following .conf .. [000a]:429000000:QAM_256:0:593:10 [0006]:429000000:QAM_256:0:337:6 [000f]:429000000:QAM_256:0:2062:15 [0001]:441000000:QAM_256:0:17:1 [0002]:441000000:QAM_256:0:81:2 [0003]:441000000:QAM_256:0:145:3 [0001]:447000000:QAM_256:0:17:1 [0002]:447000000:QAM_256:0:81:2 [0003]:447000000:QAM_256:0:145:3 [0001]:453000000:QAM_256:0:1639:1 [0002]:453000000:QAM_256:0:2062:2 [000c]:453000000:QAM_256:0:1640:12 [0008]:465000000:QAM_256:0:465:8 [0006]:465000000:QAM_256:0:337:6 [0007]:465000000:QAM_256:0:401:7 [0004]:465000000:QAM_256:0:209:4 [0002]:465000000:QAM_256:0:81:2 [0001]:465000000:QAM_256:0:17:1 [0003]:465000000:QAM_256:0:145:3 [000c]:465000000:QAM_256:0:1638:12 [0004]:471000000:QAM_256:0:209:4 [0006]:471000000:QAM_256:0:337:6 [0005]:471000000:QAM_256:0:273:5 [0002]:471000000:QAM_256:0:81:2 [0001]:471000000:QAM_256:0:17:1 [0003]:471000000:QAM_256:0:145:3 [000a]:471000000:QAM_256:0:593:10 [000b]:471000000:QAM_256:0:2062:11 [0008]:471000000:QAM_256:0:465:8 [0009]:471000000:QAM_256:0:529:9 [0003]:495000000:QAM_256:0:145:3 [000e]:495000000:QAM_256:0:849:14 [0008]:495000000:QAM_256:0:465:8 [0001]:495000000:QAM_256:0:17:1 [0002]:495000000:QAM_256:0:81:2 [0009]:495000000:QAM_256:0:529:9 [000e]:543000000:QAM_256:0:849:14 next (as per the above article) I stopped the backend .. sudo /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend stop Then I went to run the following step (as per the above referenced article) .. azap -a 0 -f 0 -d 0 -c channels.conf FOXHD -r BUT you will notice that my .conf doesn't contain any channel names, so instead I tried using the numeric value since there was no channel name I could use .. azap -a 0 -f 0 -d 0 -c channels.conf [0001] -r Then, in the other xterm I ran the step to extract the mpeg clip .. cat /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 > output.mpeg BUT when I play it back mplayer says there is 'no video' and gives lots of CRC errors. Can someone please help me by explaining the correct way to extract this mpeg clip when I don't have any channel names? My concern is that '[0001]', for example appears in more then one place in the .conf file, yet they can't be the same channel since they are tuned to different frequencies?? thanks, Kevin |

Ok, getting somewhere I think .. went to my Motorola DCT6412, tuned both tuners into CH170 (one of the HD channels). Went into the 6412's setup menu and made a note of the tuner status .. 441000000 : QAM256: 0:17:1 441000000 : QAM256: 0:81:2 441000000 : QAM256: 0:145:3 Then I noticed in the channels.conf that there were three channels which corresponded to a frequency of 441Mhz So I edited the channels.conf so that every single channel had a unique name, i.e. I changed .. Post subject: | Solved! now able to view SD and HD content in R5B7 |
Tonight I had success; I nearly fell flat on my back when I saw A&E in HD on my monitor ![]() Using R5B7 I rerun mythtv-setup and tried once again to search for some channels. With the following setup .. Frequency table = cable and QAM256 Also unchecked 'OTA only' (tuner card = AirStar-HD5000AV-PCI rev3) I don't know how many channels it has found at this point but to see one of them being HD I am extremely relieved to say the least. Now I need to read up on how to map the channels to my channel lineup with I have set up at labs.zapt0it.com I don't know why I didn't have any success with R5B0, I am wondering now if I missed that 'OTA only' box, by default in R5B7 is it checked, which is not what I wanted, Corrected: 14 Jan 2007 I am sorry for any confusion but I have been using only two builds: R5B7 R5E50 (not R5B0!) BTW - Could you fix the title on this thread? I'm not sure there ever was an R5B50, although I am sure it was never a public release, and you're talking about R5E50 and R5B7. Recent public releases (if memory serves) in order of appearance are:
R5C7 - May 2006 R5D1 - August 2006 R5E50 - December 2006 Prior to that your're back into the somewhat confusing A series. I'm still baffled why we've had a rash of people installing such an old version lately. R5C7 was better in almost every way that I'm aware of, and while R5E50 has what looks like a long list of issues, mostly it's just a matter of them being better documented. |

I am sorry for any confusion but I have been using only two builds: R5B7 R5E50 (not R5B0!) I decided to try R5B7 because that was the build recommended by other users who had also been having problems with R5E50. I read many discussions about R5E50 including 'R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards' but could find nothing that helped. Having said that I have only been trying to use KnoppMyth & MythTV for two weeks, and do not have the experience of other uses so please don't take anything I say as gospel. I am going to give R5E50 another go as a fresh install, now I know a little bit more about what I am doing. |
