Post subject:  RE5E50: skiip-networking replacement?

Prior to R5E50, I'd open /etc/mysql/my.cnf and comment out "skip-networking". Instead of "skip-networking" appearing in my.cnf, there's now a note:

# Instead of skip-networking the default is now to listen only on
# localhost which is more compatible and is not less secure.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what that means. I'm sure it's saying the procedure is now different, but it doesn't say what that new procedure is. I've upgraded my mbe and sbe, and sure enough, the sbe can't see the mbe.

What's the new procedure? Thanks for your help.
