I'm building a linux file server using a hardware raid card. I plan on moving all of my files(mostly video) over to it for storage. I'll also probably map the video directory on my myth box to a directory on it. What would be the best way to set this up? What file system should I use, etc?

I was considering using FreeNAS, but now I'm probably going to use Fedora instead. I'm not sure if the raid card is supported in other distros, and I'm really only familiar with Fedora and Mandriva.

2 best choices are NFS or samba.

tjc did a comparison and found NFS faster

It also depends on what clients will be accessing the data too.

May want to consider the Debian Net Install too, is very minimal and quick.

I have a similar question.

I am new to MythTV and am trying to build a KnoppMyth backend and (eventually) 2+ KnoppMyth frontends.

I currently have a Windows Sever 2003 box as my file server. It has 2-200gb IDE and 2-320gb SATA drives in it (no RAID). It stores all my mp3's and videos. And yes it's full....

I'd like to transform this Win2003 server to a Linux server. I have some basic (really basic) knowledge of RedHat 6 and Fedora Core 5.

I'm wondering what Linux distro I should go with for my server? Should I combine the use of this to it being a MythTV backend and file server?

I probably will stick with KnoppMyth for my Myth project since it seems like it's pretty complete and supported nicely.

I need support for Apache, Samba(other Win clients) and Myth....

Sorry to hijack the thread but I think it is in line with what baishen78 is asking...

I've gone this route, and I went for Debian on the server, as I'd pretty much learnt Linux from Knoppmyth and so I thought it'd be the easiest to get on with.

System:
Debian Stable, 2.6.8-2-686-smp kernel
Dual 1Ghz P3
ASUS CUR-DLS motherboard
1Gb of ECC PC100 RAM
2x Silicon Image 3114 SATA cards
6x 250Gb SATA drives in RAID 5 (mdadm)
2x 40Gb PATA drives
HP 7170 Dual Port Gigabit card (64-bit PCI)

I went for SMB for my network shares, as my main desktop is still an XP machine. I'm running ext2, as I found the journaling functions of ext3 to reduce the raid performance.

It was an interesting learning curve, but worth it. The box is now also an sFTP and IRC server for a game development team I work with.

Somebody was using SME Server. It also gives some extra functionality, likes DNS server, mail server etc.
But as for stability, I don't think you can beat Debian or Slackware, or possibly the Enterprise versions of Red Hat (or Pink Tie, Whitebox) or Suse (SLES).

The great thing is as long you have set up a separate Data (and/or home) partition, you can try each of them out.

I didn't realize there was so many other people on here looking to do this, I myself am also in the process of getting ready to setup a server in the home to handle sharing and storage of MP3s and Downloaded video. I plan to leave my mythbackend in place to handle any recorded shows though.

I was going to go with Slackware (that's what I've used in the past, and is also what my "goto" linux support person uses) and was planning to setup both Samba (several WinXP boxes on the network will require access to the shares) as well as NFS (for my frontend knoppmyth PC to view downloaded shows and listen to ripped music.)

Once I get this up and running, should I just run Samba for both my XP needs as well as my Linux needs? Or would I see a benefit of setting up both Samba and NFS? What are the advantages of NFS over Samba?

why do you want to run a seperate box for serving files??

I run samba on my knoppmyth backend box as my file server, works great and the box is on 24/7 anyways

Mostly.... cuz I think it will be fun. I'd also like to start tinkering with Linux a little bit more again, I've been using pretty much Windows only for the past couple years, and I have lots of assorted hardware lying around, I find it easier to work on a project and piece something together if I have a goal or a project I'm working towards.

sounds like fun :)

All I am saying is apart form using up old hardware you have lying around, nothing you want to achieve cant be done on your backend box... and its one less machine on 24/7 burning electricity

i suggest sell old hardware and spend the money on beer to drink while your tinkering with your backend ;)

Oh yes, I absolutely realize I can make my backend do all of this..... but the downside to that is that if I tinker a little too much then I break the backend and possibly take down any upcoming recordings (the lady don't like that so much). Having a "spare" computer to tinker on is much more appealing as I can fuss without stuff without feeling like I have to be worried about breaking something.

I'm still wondering though (and maybe you don't know, but hopefully someone does) if I should bother setting up both samba and NFS for my windows and linux sharing needs, or would I be better off just setting up Samba and mounting to both windows and linux from that?

Doesn't that ring true... I have spare hardware and VMs just to make sure I don't break my production box.

My plan is to run Samba for my desktop and NFS for my myth box. What I'm trying to find out is what the best file system is for the partitions, not what sharing protocol to use.

Search around here and MythTV mailing list for recent comparision of ext3, xfs, and jfs. I recall seeing good one recently. The post is geared toward MythTV, but expains well which FS is better with big files, small files, frequently deleting files, journaling.

1994 Gateway 166 running headless; 1 gig drive and 120gb for files; OS is trustix 1.5(I think current is 3.?); it's been flawless for many years. I also have a freenas but much prefer the trustix. I've been thinking about retiring the gateway and combing the freenas files into a new trustix install.
