I'd like to shutdown mythtv/x-windows from a console session on the same box. And then be able to restart myth from the console. How do I do that without restarting the box?

Thanks,
esurfer

/etc/init.d/gdm stop
Of course you should exit mythfrontend and all other apps before stopping GDM. Note:This doesn't stop the backend.
/etc/init.d/gdm start

Is there a way to exit mythfrontend while in a console. I'm troubleshooting TV-OUT and sometimes it is running but it's just a black screen. I'd like to shutdown mythfrontend from the console and then restart it. How can I do that?

Thanks,
esurfer

you can shut it down from a console, but it's not gracefull, and you can't start it back up from there, because you have to be in X to start it.

to shut it down do killall mythfrontend

Have you searched the forum(or the troubleshooting section of the MythTV docs)? The first thing to do is run it from an xterm, try and do what it is you want to do. Then exit the frontend, you should see some output...

How do I add a shutdown feature from the main menu? As it stands I have to pull the keyboard out from the stereo cabinet to shut the pc down.

I'd prefer to just pick an option from the main menu.

Less you changed something, you should see shutdown under MainMenu -> KnoppMyth...

I have the halt option in that menu but looking at the setup general settings that halt is assigned to sudo halt. What can I assign to this menu option to power right down. I tried what I think was poweroff or whatever else the option was and it doesn't work for me.

PS. How in the heck to you keep up with answering all these posts?

Halt is the quickiest and safest way to shutdown. I just do.

Sorry...me again. sudo halt will not work for me from the menu. If I exit mythtv and go down to a prompt sudo halt works flawlessly...any ideas?

Did you create the menu item yourself or are you using Halt from the KnoppMyth Menu?

I'm using halt from the menu. I'm just wondering what to check to see what halt is actually calling. I checked and halt is in the path, etc.

/usr/share/mythtv/knoppmyth.xml

Code:
<button>
   <type>Halt </type>
   <text>Halt </text>
   <action>EXEC /usr/bin/sudo halt</action>
   </button>

I just checked and everything looks good. One thing I did find out is that it will not run as mythtv...if I run as root then it does run.

How do I would I change rights...
