Hello All,

I have a question for all of you. Has anyone tried to install a complete backend onto a DL580 first gen box? It is a 4x700 P3 Xeon, 1GB Ram, 15000 72GB Drives, 1GB Net Card.

Do you think that a dual core 3.2Ghz box with 1GB ram, 1GB Net Card, and a 500GB SATA3 Drive would out perform it?

I have both readily available but I don’t want to have to do this twice.

Thanks!!!

Man, that is one UGLY computer

The backend needs very little (relatively speaking) power. The backend's main job is that it takes a datastream from a tuner card and writes it to disk. Even HD is under 20mbps.

I can record three HD channels at once with a Sempron 2800+. Probably both your boxes are overkill for a dedicated backend, unless you do a lot of post-processing. However, setup #2 has 500gb and probably lower power requirements so I'd go with that

Tell me about it....HAHA

The sql quries and recording deletion is very laggy. It just seems like to doesnt have the horsepower to drive it all. It is a complete backend, I have not split them up yet.

Any ideas why it would be so laggy. For example, if I were to change a channel it would take about 30 seconds and this is with an internal SAT card. Also when I navigate through the recorded programs it laggs for about 10 seconds as I move to the next "Page". Also when I delete a couple of recordings it takes a long time as well.

Right now its on a 2.6 P4 1GB ram and 250GB SATA2 drive. This is all with a 1GB switch and all machines have a 1gb card as well.

Well I'll take a stab at it.

The time lag changing channels can be your tuner card. Can you get another card to put it in to test? Maybe an ATSC card?

The time lag looking through the list of recordings could be a busy system. Are you recording live TV when this is happening? Run a "top" command and what's using your resources.

Your setup seems strong enough.

One thing to have a look at might be automatic transcoding/commercial detection jobs, if you disable these and mark the channels commercial free, you will free up processor horsepower.
