well i lost yet another WinXP Pro HDD, finally decided to use the knoppmyth disc i have had around since trying to build my PVR.

Originally windows was on its own 40 Gb HDD, with a 160 GB, and 2 500 Gb drives which hold my movies, music and pictures.

installed knoppmyth on a new 80 GB hdd, but i cant find my media when i look, and i can't see teh drives.

will knoppmyth read the data from the drives that are NTFS formatted?

Yes, it will. The correct pieces are include to accomplish what it is you desire. You can check the wiki to see if someone has posted details or google for ntfs or ntfs-3g.

verboten1,
What exactly is confusing you? What Knoppmyth version are you trying to use? I'd like to help you get away from M$, but you're not giving enough information.

Class is now in session!

i downloaded the knoppmyth R5F1

i have my media on one of the 500GB drives,
it is a dynamic drive from windows XP pro

I want to leave the media there, and access it from knoppmyth.

and also be able to add files to it from my other computer.

What is confusing you? Is the 500GB NTFS drive SATA or IDE? Please be more detailed.

That is because KnoppMyth will not automatically see and setup fstab for NTFS formatted partitions. You need to find a guide that you can follow on how to set it up. Once that is done and you specify the path in the setup, it should just work. I suggest finding a guide, posting a link and asking specific questions.

Are the large media drives mounting? Sounds like if their mounted correctly, you'll need to point the 'video settings' to the correct directory. Or better yet sym-link the drives with your media to the /myth/video directory. I've only played with this and I'm a newbie myself, so I can't help you much further. Maybe try a search for "mount"? Also this linux help has been great for me.

<or what Cecil said :)>

I understand what issues you're having, we just need more info. Ok, since it's an IDE drive, linux will seee the drive as /dev/hd[a,b,c,d,e,f...]N (where N is a partition number). You need to figure out what the drive/partition is called.

    boot knoppmyth
    ctrl-alt-F1
    log in as root
    Code:
    # dmesg | grep hd

This should produce something like this:
Quote:
hda: max request size: 512KiB
hda: 586114704 sectors (300090 MB) w/16384KiB Cache, CHS=36483/255/63, UDMA(100)
hda: cache flushes supported
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3

I'm guessing your drive will come up as hdb (secondary drive on IDE channel 1) hdc (Primary drive on IDE 2) or hdd (Secondary drive on IDE 2). The number right after hda is the partition number, i.e. hda3. You need to mount that partition to an empty folder on the filesystem. Let's make one.

Code:
# mkdir /mnt/xp_videos

Now I think you can follow the directions here for the rest:
Code:
# pico /usr/share/doc/ntfs-3g/README.Debian

Too Many Secrets advice to symlink your xp_video directory to /myth/video will make it easy to view them from MythTV.
Code:
# man ln
for info on that.

And don't forget if you get a puncture, doesn't mean the bike needs to be thrown away :P

Hi,

As a tip, install and setup your KnoppMyth machine first. Go through all the setup screens so the gallery can show you pictures, you can rip and play music and if you have a tuner card get it to show you tv .

Once you have it running like a well oiled bike, then give the details of what you have and what you want to achieve. There is much talent on the forum and they have been helping folks for quite sometime.

Mike
