I was planning on setting up MythTV with Ubuntu when I can across KnoppMyth. Am i correct in my assumption this is a minimalist Linux base with no KDE/Gnome launched just X and enough to run Myth? Thanks!

It is setup as a settop box, so it does not have gnome or kde. It uses fluxbox as the wm, but mythtv launches on boot, so you don't ever really see the wm. It is not minimalist by some people's standards, but it is kept to only programs that relate to using it as a media based set top box as much as possible.

Perfect thanks. I will give it a go then :) Never used Knoppix. Does it by chance install Samba by default?

Samba's there, you just have to turn it on.

Hi,

I would say it is far from a minimalist system. It does the task of being a PVR very well but you do not need to stop there.

Don't let the knoppix name association fool you. It simply (now days) only uses the hardware detection scripts of knoppix, once it is installed is based on Debian.

The idea behind KnoppMyth is to have an easy to install Digital Set Top Box on the widest range of hardware. If you are not that familiar with computers and playing around, you have the option of using the KnoppMyth Reference Platform (KRP), this way you are nearly certain for the hardware and software to work as expected.

If you take a look of at the wiki you will find a lot of information on how to extend your KnoppMyth box, with a lot of extras available on the base install or easily installable.

Just remember the primary goal of KnoppMyth is to be a Set Top Box, whatever else you do with it is just the icing on the cake.
