Pretty basic question here, I had the itch to install adobe reader on my mythbackend box.
I read thru the docs on

http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-install-adobe-reader-811-on-debian-linux.html

then I downloaded the file AdobeReader_enu-8.1.1.i386.deb

Next I logged in as root and ran

Code:
dpkg -i Adobereader_enu-8.1.1.i386.deb

This installed the program fine and now I can run it as root with the command
acroread

Now here is my question. Ideally I would like to run this as user Myth Tv as a plugin
to iceape. Is it ok to use apt-get to get the plugin when I already have the app installed for root?

Moreover, I would also like to add to fluxbox something like Apps/Office/AdobeReader8
for mythtv user

Keeping in mind that the next version of knoppmyth is due relatively soon I do not want
to mess up the upgrade path so can someone kindly point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Some semi-educated guesses...

1 - Just play around with it. You can 'dpkg -r package1'
(or 'apt-get remove package2') and try loading them in a
different order if it doesn't work.

2 - Upgrades basically wipe out everything but the video files
and the Sql database, so you will have to reinstall your add-ons
after upgrading anyway.

Hi Cliff

I did a little test today and when I ran Iceape as root the plugin works correctly. So I think the install script only took into account the root user account. Basically, when I lauch Iceape from Fluxbox it does not recognise the plugin because user MythTV does not have permission to the files. I checked the path and it's in

/root/.adobe/Acrobat/
I think it should be in
/home/mythtv/

I also ran
find / -name AdobeReader*.*
it shows
/root/Desktop/AdobeReader.desktop
but I think it needs to be in
/usr/share/applications/AdobeReader.desktop

As for the upgrade I need to compile a list of all my changes to the base image. As time goes on I'm expanding the capabilities of my box quite a bit in this past year

Thanks for sharing your thoughts
