I bought a Chaintech AV-710 soundcard and I can't get it to work. I know it is alive, because if I boot into Windows, it works just fine. Running alsamixer yields alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory lspci | grep audio 01:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies Inc. VT1720/24 [Envy24PT/HT] PCI Multi-Channel Audio Controller (rev 01) Running alsaconf doesn't fix it either. How can I start troubleshooting this? |

I have one, and it's working fine outputting digital, but it sounds like your problem is with alsa detecting the card. Did you add it to an existing installation, or did you install with the card in your machine? |

what does Code: aplay -l give you?
Other things that might affect it is the pci slot it's in. |

the asound .conf shouldn't be an issue right now. It looks like alsa isn't even seeing your onboard sound chip, not the av 710. As an aside, have you tried using the onboard sound? I would say try moving the slot that the av 710 is in and see if alsa picks it up. I would also double check that your onboard is disabled in the bios. |

I've tried changing the PCI slot and that didn't change anything. The slot shouldn't be an issue if the card works in Windows. Would disabling the onboard sound really make a difference? I've tried that and had the same results. |

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory I was directed to this thread for the commands to display my sound card info. I don't have the same sound card as you. When I first ran alsamixer I could get in. When I ran alsaconf and then alsamixer I got the above error message. I then did a Code: touch /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and reran alsaconf and then I could get into alsamixer again. Not sure if this is of any use but figured I'd share.

different os's handle IRQ assignments differently, so the slot can be an issue even if it works in windows. If you're not using the onboard sound for anything then it makes a lot of sense to disable it, for no other reason than to take another variable out of the system. Having two sound cards also can really mess with udev's device assignments, which I have to deal with on one of my boxes. What does the aplay command say after you disable the onboard sound? |
