I used ceenvee703's solution on my R4V4.1 until I had to switch out video cards and re-install the nvidia driver a couple of times and now with Nvidia's new 6111 video driver it doesn't work. Attempting the apt-get install nvidia-glx returns the following error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
nvidia-glx: Depends: nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

I'm guessing that means that the apt-get glx installation for this new driver is not available yet??

Anyway, so I then used TJC's solution and that works until a reboot. A small correction to TJC's solution is to be sure and put the full path on both parts of the link creation. Instead of:

ln -s /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6106 libnvidia-tls.so.1

it should be:

ln -s /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.6106 /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1

The two forms are the same if you're in the /usr/lib/tls/ directory as shown in the original example. [shrug]

re: the 480i mode. Does one have to have an HDTV or HD-ready TV to use this? When I change "NTSC-M" to "HD480i" gdm won't start.

the 1080i is a different setting than NTSC/PAL reference the nvidia readme file.

Thanks. OK so HD480i is not HDTV then ( which I guess is HD1080*). I still don't get why it is that changing

Option "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"

to

Option "TVStandard" "HD480i"

Doesn't work.

cause hd480i is not a tv standard. tvstandards are ntsc-? pal-? and I guess if you were considering hdtv which we are but aren't maybe ATSC. And no 480i is not really hdtv. some people don't concider 480p to be hdtv either and are upset at fox for using it, most common is 720p and 1080i to be concidered true hdtv, but you aren't going to get those resolutions out of svid anyways.

I'm a little confused. According to ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-6111/README.txt
The "TVStandard" option should be added to your screen section; valid
values are:

"PAL-B" : used in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Guinea,
Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, The
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain,
Sweden, and Switzerland
"PAL-D" : used in China and North Korea
"PAL-G" : used in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Malaysia,
The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
and Switzerland
"PAL-H" : used in Belgium
"PAL-I" : used in Hong Kong and The United Kingdom
"PAL-K1" : used in Guinea
"PAL-M" : used in Brazil
"PAL-N" : used in France, Paraguay, and Uruguay
"PAL-NC" : used in Argentina
"NTSC-J" : used in Japan
"NTSC-M" : used in Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador,
Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, South
Korea, Taiwan, United States of America, and Venezuela
"HD480i" : 480 line interlaced
"HD480p" : 480 line progressive
"HD720p" : 720 line progressive
"HD1080i": 1080 line interlaced
"HD1080p": 1080 line progressive
"HD576i" : 576 line interlace
"HD576p" : 576 line progressive
So how do I actually use the HD480i option?

Adrian

HD480i worked for me... Have you looked in your log files to see why X isn't happy? The file is generally at: /var/log/XFree86.0.log

well you can get much better. some still say they have problems cause the recording is not exactly 480i or they don't exactly match up or whatever, but I had it running at 640x480 with the 480i and xvmc with no deinterlace filter, and it was pretty darn good.

as for the other I was mistaken I guess the HD values do go in the same place as the NTSC, It's been a while since I did it and I forgot.

So do I put...

Option "TVStandard" "NTSC-M"
Option "TVStandard" "HD480i"
Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"

or

Option "TVStandard" "HD480i" # with no line for NTSC-M
Option "TVOutFormat" "SVIDEO"

I was unable to get the display to start with out including the line for NTSC-M. However, I'm not sure if the HD480i line is being handled. The display looks ok but still a little soft.

Here is my logfile....

If I do the opposite and comment out the line with "HD480i" the display starts up just fine. The thing is that I'm actually trying to use the 480i mode to possibly improve my display.

my suggestion go find a modeline generator on the web, I always have to google for them, and create yourself a 640x480 60hz modeline. you can use 30-50 as the horz should be fine. and try that.
