Hi All,

Well after some 18 months of myth running pretty much faultlessly on R5E50 we decided to upgrade the old 68cm tv to a nice new Pioneer 50” HD. Intention is to migrate to the current release and also upgrade teh HDD, but first the tv came and here-in begins my troubles. I'vve been searching the forums and have hit a bit of a wall

First some background.
Me – newbie to linux really
Myth – R5E50 - running on an AMD althlon 3600, 1Gb Ram with a Gainward FX Powerpack Pro/660 TV-DVI 128Mb Pci card (which has a NVidia FX5200 chipset.
My Xorg file from memory needed a couple of tweaks when i first moved to atv from a pc monitor– I think I needed to change the TVOutformat option to SVIDEO.

The new tv is 1920 by 1080 at 60Hz, using a modeline calculator from http://www.arachnoid.com/modelines/ I got this
# 1920x1080 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 67.08 kHz; pclk: 172.80 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 172.80 1920 2040 2248 2576 1080 1081 1084 1118 -HSync +Vsync

Which I have inserted into my xorg file into the Monitor section and restarted the machine without success.

Thinking the modeliens may not be correct a bit more research led me to being able to probe the tv using EDID info
http://www.mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12158&highlight=startx+logverbose
however running startx - --verbose 6 produced this error

Code:
xauth:  creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.4217

X: warning; process set to priority -1 instead of requested priority 0

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up.
xinit:  unable to connect to X server
xinit:  No such process (errno 3):  Server error.

I got around this by adding –logverbose 6 to the severargs in startx

So I have a couple of questions.
1. I’ve only added a new modeline to the Monitor section. Does this need to be referenced anywhere else?
2. Is my video card up to producing 1080? as the log file only lists lower res modes as supported, or are new drivers needed

Any advice greatly received – after 3 days of watching live tv the wife is over ads and wants myth back and working.

It's been a while since I played with modelines... but from dumb memory.

Code:
SubSection "Display"
      Depth     24
      Modes "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubSection

This part needs to add something like this...
Code:
SubSection "Display"
      Depth     24
      Modes "1920x1080" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubSection

This should call the modeline that you added if it can run.

Thanks for pointer, I added the 1920x1080 to the Display Subsection but without success and no visible change to the log file.

My modeline is called 1920x1080_60 so I tried that and found that it requested this mode but without suceess.

Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: TV-0
(II) NVIDIA(0): Requested modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "1920x1080_60"
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "800x600"
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "640x480"
(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1920x1080_60"; removing.

You haven't mentioned how you are connecting you computer to you new TV. I don't think with a 50" Screen you will be using S-Video. I noticed you still had that in your x.org config file. Perhaps you could remove that.

Also it looks like X was running when you tried to probe fo EDID details, you need to ensure you exit out of MythTV and X completely before running that command.

I hope this steers you in the right direction.

To quote the MythTV wiki:

Quote:
Additionally, it is worth noting that nVidia has made some changes to their driver to eliminate the need for customized Modelines for the popular formats (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p).

(from http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Configuring_HDTV#NVIDIA )

Follow the link dealing with Component Out in that section of the wiki and look at the Nvidia macros example. No modelines needed, just have to make sure you are using the "UseEvents" "True" option in the Device section of xorg.conf, and then set "1920x1080_60" in the Screen section.

I have no modelines in my xorg.conf and it works great.

How does it know if your TV is running 1280x720 or 1366X768 (using a "720p" example)? I'm guessing "720p_60" is 1280X720 only? My TV is 1366X768...

Way back when I tried running one of my sets at its exact resolution (which was also 1366x768), I could never get X to run at that resolution because 1366 is not evenly divisible by 8. This was a few years ago though, and things may have improved since then.

Nowadays I'd rather do other things than mess with modelines and dot clocks, so I just use the built-in examples. The way I see it, a Blu-Ray player doesn't "know" your TV set is 1280x720 or 1366x768, it just outputs a standard 720p signal and it works. Using the built-in examples makes your video card do the same thing as a Blu-Ray player.

PS: check this thread, it claims that with recent Nvidia drivers you can just put "1360x768" into the display section and it will work (note, not 1366 since that's not divisible by 8 ).

See my recent post under Tier 1 Hardware recommendations which discusses upgrading from SDTV output to HDTV output at 1920x1080 with the Nvidia drivers on an FX5200 based video card. http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19668 The key is mostly taking things OUT of your xorg.conf. Mine is very stripped down. Notice that I have no modelines in my monitor section below.

Thx for the post tjc. I initially got it working using the modeline calculator here http://www.arachnoid.com/modelines/ but there was a lot of overscan so I upgraded my nVidia drivers & used the non-modeline nVidia macro like you and bam, worked first time, very nice. I noticed the res came up as 1360 X 768 which is ok, I guess, not sure if that means there's some scaling going on on the TV but I'm not a videophile and it looks good to me.

Thx!

Model of the TV? I'd look up it's specs but you didn't provide enough detail.

Well, I didn't provide any detail as I wasn't looking for any help, I think I'm good now, other than the minor detail of the 1360 vs 1366 horizontal resolution. Actually there is one other small detail - my fonts in MythVideo & the EPG etc are really small, something that I'm guessing can be fixed by defining the correct displaysize parm?

To be precise, I am using the following "modes" line in my "Screen" section and have no modelines defined! Note that this "1280X720_60" gives me a 1360X768 screen at 60Hz! I guess it is reading the EDID info from the TV to figure out its native res & get as close as possible? (I also have "UseEdidDpi" set to "true").

Code:
Modes    "1280x720_60" "720x480_60"

Well the max resolution of 1366 x 768 explains why it doesn't do 1920 x 1080. That was what I half expected from your reported resolutions, although some of the earlier HD sets which would do 1080i would lie when used as a monitor and report lower capabilities. Also the "divisible by 8" rule explains why it knocks 1366 down to 1360.

Assuming that you don't have the UseEdid options (including UseEdidDpi) set to false it should be getting true specs from the monitor. Checking your /var/log/Xorg.0.log should tell you what the system is getting from the monitor, including the suggested timing modes. Find the best preferred and validated one and put it's name in your Screen section.

You're looking for a section of the log labeled Modes in ModePool and prefer the ones that say "(from: EDID)" (or from that and other sources). For example:

Code:
root@black2:~# grep '(from: .*EDID)' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
