sometimes one of my PVR-500 tuners will result in a empty recording.

the machine has a PVR-350 and PVR-150 and uses the 350 then the 150 then the 500 tuner A then B. I dont know exactly whats going on, maybe it's out of ram?

Have you checked the myth backend logs? I've found that at times they provide useful info. You'll need to look at the time frame when the recording was attempted.

Just to amplify marc's response, you can find the logs in /var/log/mythtv. The backend is mythbackend.log and the frontend is mythfrontend.log. I like to use "less" to page thru the logs:

Code:
less /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

this is all kinda jibberish...

I see something all over the place about ivtv driver stopped responding which seems to only happen for /dev/video 2 which would be the first tuner on the PVR-500

I see something about a preview failed because a file didnt exist (probably related)

1. Has your current hardware configuration ever been stable? If so, for how long?

2. Have you made any recent hardware changes?

3. Please post the output of "cat /proc/interrupts"

4. Please post a few of the error messages you are seeing in the myth backend logs. It will be useful to see the exact error message.

Thanks.

I haven't run into this particular issue with my 500, but I have had the signal go all scrambly bambly on me. To fix this I shutdown and remove power form the box for at least 30 seconds. This will force the firmware to load form scratch again.

I need a dictionary for all these technical terms!

:P

I'd definitely start with the "really off" (unplugged or switched off at the power supply) for at least 30 seconds, and double checking all the cables and connections. On the rare occasions where my PVR cards had some problem those were inevitably the cause.

FWIW - Anyone who _ever_ have to troubleshoot _anything_ should read David Agans "Debugging" - http://www.debuggingrules.com/ it's one of those slim but invaluable volumes that is both easy to read and full of useful lessons. Here, rule #7 - "check the plug". Marc's suggest to check the logs falls under either rule #3 - "quit thinking and look" or rule #6 - "keep (and check) an audit trail".

I know it sounds stupid and obvious, but are you absolutely sure your signal level is good at the tuners? The problems you have seem like they could be caused by poor cables or splitters in the system.
