Post subject:  How to take a screenshot in Linux?

I've searched here and Googled and can't find an adequate answer...

I want to put some screenshots up on the wiki article I want to write on xine. I don't have any idea how one does screenshots under Linux, though. Ideally this utility would do a screen grab when you pressed a key or keys, and would also capture menus while they are being pulled down. I also don't want to have to bring something to the front, so I can take a pic of a single frame of a DVD being played by xine.

The searches seem to indicate there's a program called "gnome-screenshot" but that name isn't recognized by apt-get.

Searches also say that you can use the Gimp to do this, but this seems like overkill, plus, don't see how you could take the picture without bringing the Gimp to the front

There's also apparently some command line programs but, again, don't see how I could get a picture of JUST the xine screen if I had to bring a xterm window to the front to fire off a command line.

Thanks for the newbie help.

Thanks for the lead: yes, if you press 't' then xine takes a screenshot (which will be great for before/after shots of post-processing).

However it doesn't take a shot of any of its dialog boxes or menus, which would be nice to include.

So, back to the original question: will anything do this? Is it just "print screen" a la Windows?
