Does anyone have this video type working on their myth box?

Yes. And yes.

I've a ton of .mkv files I've ripped from bluray and DVD that play under MythVideo.
Admittedly, majority of my content is HD but I'm using an nvidia card and VDPAU.

Incidentally I'm using makemkv on my Ubuntu box to do my rips.

Thank Tophee. Did it work 'out of the box'? or was there anything that needed to be configured? Any guidance (from anyone) would be appreciated to getting me on the path to playing .mkv videos on my box.

I am planning to tranisition over to HD, before I plunk down $ for more gear, I would like to verify that I can play .mkv files with existing gear (in signature). I would think that a dual core 2.4 Ghz CPU with the 256MB Jaton card would be sufficient. If this is not the case, I'm hoping others with the same mobo using the SD or HDMI could confirm compatibility.

When I tried to play a sample .mkv (720) through the native myth player it did nothing. VLC on a Toshiba single core laptop (XP on A135-S4656) would sometimes have difficulty, but I'm not sure if it's the single core 1.6 Ghz or the video card that's maxed out. Either way, the mythbox hardware specs significantly exceed the laptop, so I believe that it can be done.

My install of linhes is pretty vanilla. I've no recollection of making any specific changes I've made beyond making sure I've an appropriate playback profile to enable VDPAU. I did that along time ago, so that has probably carried over in upgrades (?) either that or linhes is getting good at auto detecting the right setting!

I think the only limiting factor is your graphics card. And ensuring the correct playback profile to enable VDPAU. My setup won't play HD content without vdpau enabled. I think that your issue with your mkv sample file is that it is HD content.

I see you've an nvidia gpu card which one is it? Have you checked here to see if it will work with VDPAU? Originally VDPAU wouldn't work with less than 512 mb graphics ram on an appropriate gpu, but according to that page some 256 mb cards will work with VDPAU.

If supported, enable VDPAU and try your HD sample again. Or perhaps add mkv to file types that myth recognises.

I think you have identified the solution: as I understand it, your system won't play HD (.mkv in this case) because it is necessary enable VDPAU.

I'd like to think this is not the case and that the Dual Core could perform the decoding, however, until someone else chimes in to confirm such, I must assume that VDPAU is required.

If you are on myth .22 as your sig indicates you will want to update to myth .24 (LH R6.04 or LH R7.x) as there were quite a few improvements to mkv playback. As for performance it depends on the quality of the mkv you will be playing back. DVD rips to h.264 mkv should playback fine with cpu decoding. Bluray 1080p high bitrate rips is where you may run into performance issues with cpu decoding. You don't say what nVidia card you have but if it isn't vdpau capable you can usually pickup a lowend g210 after rebates for $10-$20.

I'm not sure that was ever true but there is no doubt 512MB is preferred and for most of the cards I have they are allocated 512MB.

However I recently enabled an NVidia 9300M (low power version of a 9300) and it also only has 256MB of memory. Given the processor isn't as powerful as a full 9300 and perhaps with the lower memory, I do need to run it with the VDPAU slim profile. HD content still plays great. The only issue with slim is that SD recorded content doesn't deinterlace as well.

For what it's worth I have higher spec Core2 duo's than OP has in his sig. It can decode most HD content except for some of the heavier content. Most of my HD content is recorded on HD-PVR's and the core2's have no issue with that at all. I originally over spec'ed my processors in case formats emerged that VDPAU couldn't handle. Thus far it has not been the case.
