my myth box is a ffmpeg nightmare. while trying to install mythstream I tried upgrading ffmpeg several times...now I seem to have ffmpeg code, header files everywhere.

Code:
find / -name ffmpeg
/usr/bin/ffmpeg
/usr/include/mythtv/ffmpeg
/usr/include/ffmpeg
/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg
/usr/local/ffmpeg
/usr/local/ffmpeg/ffmpeg
/usr/share/doc/ffmpeg
/var/local/ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1/libavformat/ffmpeg
/var/local/ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1/ffmpeg
/var/local/vlc-0.8.1/modules/codec/ffmpeg

can I apt-get remove ffmpeg and manually delete every reference to ffmpeg then apt-get install.

does mythtv use ffmpeg anywhere? will the delete and reinstall break myth?

I would like to build ffmpeg with lame (does that make sense) for mythstream. I'm also planning on running zoneminder.

can someone please explain the relationship between ffmpeg and lame

should I / can I reinstall lame...man, I wish I knew what lame was

Don't know any answers to those questions. Just remember, though, that some of those instances are directories, not just files.

Also, here's all references to ffmpeg as a separate file or directory on a R5A15.1 system:

Code:
/usr/include/mythtv/ffmpeg
/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg
/usr/local/include/ffmpeg
/usr/local/share/nuvexport/export/ffmpeg

Google is your friend. While MythTV does use ffmpeg, the version it uses is bundled with it. So removing ffmpeg, won't have an affect of MythTV.

perfect, thanx for the two responses...the references that are directories are mor of the concern as they hold the tangle of header files that are causing my mythstream adn zoneminder build headaches.

I will be doing a ffmpeg exercism and rebirth in the nead future.

cesman, the ffmpeg references under /usr/include/mythtv/ffmpeg
are safe to remove? maybe cause me some pain if I try to recompile mythtv in the future?

maybe all of this should wait until after I upgrade to R5.

I wouldn't remove anything under /usr/include/mythtv.
