so since 720x480 res. would be 3:2 and not 4:3, the Xtiming modeline calculator just switches to the next closest 4:3 resolution?

Correct.

Should I just go back to that Xtiming calculator on sourceforge and try again without the 4:3 constraint?

Incorrect. Again, I'm pretty sure the TV out will want 640x480 or 800x600 resolution: the TV out hardware handles converting the square pixel 640x480 resolution to the 720x480 non-square-pixel resolution the TV expects.

Now, you had said that you didn't like 640x480 because "VGA res is way too small." Are you saying things are appearing too small or that you feel the resolution is way too small. If the latter, well, that's more or less TV resolution, so running at 800x600 on the computer is still only giving you 720x480 out of the TV out.

PS: there is a sample XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11/ called xf86config-4.nvidia-tvout.sample. I checked the modelines in there and there were no 720x480 ones... only 4:3 square pixel ones (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768)

Thanks for that. Okay, well, assuming you're correct, why does the picture look so good on the TV when I set 720x480 in the nvtv GUI? Is it not ouputting that resolution? What's up?

The signal coming out of the back of your computer and going to your TV set is certainly 720x480. The signal that gets sent to your TV out circuitry is usually (again) 640x480 or 800x600. Still not sure why 640x480, or 800x600, is no good for you, or what looks worse about it than using nvtv and 720x480.

I've never messed with nvtv so I'm not sure why it will apparently do 720x480, but your modeline won't. I guess you could try the modeline generator and see if it will give you a 720x480 modeline that works... you'd turn off the "force 4:3" option.

Sorry I took so long to get back to this-I'm working on about 6 issues at once.
Thanks for that ceenvee. I appreciate your patience and your help.

Now, I managed to get TV-OUT working in other modes using only a modeline in XF86Config-4, but I still can't get 720x480 yet. I added a 720x480 modeline calculated using http://xtiming.sourceforge.net

The modeline is:
Code:
# 720x480, 59.94Hz;hfreq=15.27, vfreq=59.94
ModeLine "720x480"       12.59  720  752  792 824   480  491  494  505 +hsync +vsync

I have my metamode for 720x480. as you can see in previous post, However, my XFree86.0.log contains this:
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "640x480" (no mode of this name)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "720x480" (no mode of this name)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Not using mode "768x576" (not a valid TV mode)

(**) NVIDIA(0):      Default mode "320x240": 12.6 MHz, 31.5 kHz, 60.1 Hz (D)

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 800 x 600
(++) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (100, 100)
(II) Loading sub module "fb"

Thanks.
