Thank you for all your work putting this system together and supporting it.

OK, some questions from someone who has worked closely with DOS and Windows since the PC first came out... But hs never worked with Linux.

1. Linux (Knoppix, KnoppMyth) requires a separate partition to run, correct? I've downloaded the ISO file, burned it to CD, and successfully booted to it, but I'd better go no further at this point, right?

2. Maybe I can't do this without repartitioning and reinstalling XP? Can't do this with a second hard drive, if I understand correctly, must be on /dev/hda, meaning the primary hard drive, right?

3. I'm not sure I understand the steps for installation... First run AutoInstall, and from then on just choose Frontend?

4. Will this all work with my ATI TV-WONDER, or HDTV-WONDER?

THANK YOU! :)

Tom.

When I still used my myth box as a part time Windows PC, I bought a new hard disk, installed myth onto it connected as /dev/hda and installed the windows disk at /dev/hdc. I could boot into windows by pressing F12 when the bios started up and it would present a boot menu which allowed me to select either hard drive to boot from.

Sorry, one more question...

5. What does all of this look like when done? I can see MythTV screenshots here and there, and Knoppix screenshots, too. I guess it's all of MythTV, plus a scaled-down Knoppix? Does anyone have screen shots?

Thanks again.

Tom.

3. First you install the KnoppMyth distribution--that's when you pick AutoInstall. After that installs and you reboot, you're then configuring MythTV, at which point you'll need to configure the frontend (for watching TV) and the backend (recording TV). With one computer, you run both the frontend and the backend on the same box.

4. I'm almost positive the All in Wonder won't work. I'm positive the HDTV Wonder won't work.

The CD can be booted standalone to run as a frontend. This will let you see the GUI.

Do a google search for MythTV themes. You'll find lots of pictures. e.g. - http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythFeatures

BTW - You wouldn't happen to be "Evil Tom" would you?

Thanks for your responses.

Greg, maybe I will use a separate hard drive. Good idea.

ceenvee, Thanks for clarifying what the front end and back end are - this wasn't completely clear to me before. BTW, the All-in-Wonder is different from what I have, but I may just need to move to the Hauppauge PVR-350 for all the nice hardware encoding and decoding.

tjc, thanks - maybe I'll try just selecting "Frontend." I was thinking that wouldn't work because of the info below:

Quote:
http://www.mysettopbox.tv/doc.html#frontend
This allows you to use the CD as a frontend
if you have a MythTV backend setup.
Note: Using the CD as a frontend is dependant
upon the backend being configured with MySQL
listening on the network.

6. Is MySQL required? Is it included on the KnoppMyth CD image?

I didn't say it'd work without a backend, just that you should be able to see enough to get a feel for the GUI. ;-)

Yes, and yes. In intent and theory the CD contains everything you need for a working system. Occasionally you need to hunt down and install a newer (unstable) version of some driver or use apt-get to install a supplemental library or application (your favorite editor, a daemon to monitor your UPS, ...).

Oh well, it's already getting pretty steamy out here in Arlington, time to go someplace cooler....
