Hi all:

Well, I couldn't figure out why the picture on my monitor didn't seem right. Then I realized
I'd swapped out my 15" monitor for a 17" monitor. A propos of that, what's the best way to
tell X that you've replaced your monitor with a diff. one- Should I re-run xf86config to
get new DDC probings ??? I tried that just now, and replaced the "nv" with
"nvidia", but X gave me a
"No screens found" error. This is once again on R5A12, BTW.

Thanks everyone.

shplad

Well, yeah. If I can, I'd like to be able to run 720x480

Thanks

The picture has definitely changed-it's not quite right on the current monitor.

No one knows an easy way to reconfigure?

Either get out the documentation for the monitor or look at the label on the back. One of them should tell you the Horz and Vert sync ranges. Change those settings in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to match. Second if there is a particular resolution that you want, go over to the modeline generator at http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl and plug in the parameters then add the resulting modeline to your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as well. Oh, and don't forget to add it's name to the list of "Modes" down in the Display SubSection for your Screen.

Thanks for that. That's basically what I had figured. But, (newbie question here), don't ALL
the modelines need to be recalculated for the best picture on a different monitor? It's not
much work to insert the horiz. and vert. scan freqs. and one modeline, but to recalculate
every modeline would be, if I want the best results possible.

Thanks

I've made some progress. I made those changes, and after about 2 straight hours of tweaking,
I finally have a decent picture. (I tried 60Hz, but got too much graininess and flickering. I get
much better results with 59.95 Hz.)

Now, there are two things I still need to fix:

1. Watching live TV does not work-I simply get a black screen from which I cannot escape.
Playing back recorded shows works fine, however. This is definitely related to XF86Config-4
settings, as this never occurred with my previous XF86Config-4 file. It also works fine if I
switch back to my old XF86Config-4 file

2. I still want to get 720x480 interlaced on the TV (but don't need it on the monitor). I'm pretty
sure that's the native mode of this TV, since with my old vidcard, I had a better quality
and a more complete picture. Do I still need to calculate a modeline for this mode if I only
want it on the TV and not the monitor?

Thanks

Not really, modelines are like dishes on a restraunt menu, you don't have to eat them all. All you really need is at least one that works for you.
