Post subject:  How to set a fixed IP address?

I would like to set a fixed (constant) IP address for my Myth box. I have a home network with a NAT router. When I lose power in the house and I have to start my Myth box again, often the DCHP gives it a different address and I then have to update the port forwarding in the router so that I can get to MythWeb from the outside again.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks.

As root in an xterm window run:
Code:
netcardconfig

be sure to select an IP address valid for your LAN 192.168.0.XXX or 192.168.1.XXX are the usual suspects.

Also be sure the value you hard code to the myth box wont be passed out via DHCP to another machine

Alternatively you could see if you can reserve the address on your router so it gives the MAC address of your mythtv box the same IP each time :)

Regarding setting up the fixed IP address, there is a small trick I do on my systems at home that might be useful.

On Windows XP :

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

On Windows 98/ME I believe it is in the C:\Windows directory.

There is a file called hosts, if you do not have hosts it is probably called hosts.sam if so copy it to hosts and edit it.

Anyway it is the same as /etc/hosts on your Linux box.

So I modify it to make mythtv point to the IP address of my mythbox and then it is easy to just type http://mythtv to get to the mythweb.

I put a copy of it on all my Windows boxes at home (for the wife and kids).

This is the line in my hosts

192.168.1.30 mythtv

on the topic of hosts files on windows boxes here is another neat thing that you can do.

By adding the names of servers that host the images in website adds to the host file you can avoid downloading and seeing the images. My current hosts file looks like this:

Code:
#
# myth box
#
192.168.1.50  mythtv

#
# ad blocking hacks
#
127.0.0.1 a1.interclick.com
127.0.0.1 view.atdmt.com
127.0.0.1 ads.x10.com
127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 m3.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ads5.canoe.ca
127.0.0.1 a.tribalfusion.com
127.0.0.1 speed.pointroll.com
127.0.0.1 ad.ca.doubleclick.net
127.0.0.1 ads.drf.com
127.0.0.1 media.fastclick.net
127.0.0.1 cdn.fastclick.net
127.0.0.1 funbar.ebaumsworld.com
127.0.0.1 servedby.advertising.com
127.0.0.1 cdn.eyewonder.com
127.0.0.1 sales.liveperson.net
127.0.0.1 s0b.bluestreak.com

This causes a little broken link symbol in place of any ad images from these sites. Not as distracting and probably speeds the loading of pages

This forum isn't dedicated to Windows support (period). Take it off topic.

im tryin to do the same for my wifi dongle. it works well on DHCP but i sufer from the same probel as the first post. i cant reserve based on mac address :(
and i did do my settings correctly.
gave it a 192.168.2.8 (anything below 100 on the last 3 digits is static on my network) (and no, 8 is not already taken up...)

it asks for a bunch of the usual stuff..... gate way DNS ect.
BUT i am confused by the broadcast address (i put 192.168.2.255) and when i do this it no worky (web browser gives the unknown host error) and the myth web and webmin is non accessable (even through lan) so i think its the broadcast address, or the bssid (can i leave it blank, or is it the name thats gettin it all screwed up.)

and the wifi parameters, wht should i put in there, i know i want infustructure mode but how do i get that? its not an option, do i just set it as auto, and the channel can i set that as auto as well? the freaquency?

otherwise share the settins that worked for you (if you have wifi)

NEVERMIND. im a fu*king dumbass.

the default ip that it suggests.... is 192.168.0.SOMETHIN

i needed 2 change the 0 into a 2

mesa a dumbfu*k
