G'day all,

I am getting interested in PCI Latency and would be interested to know what others have.

I have the kids DVD's on a hard drive that is on another host is NFS mounted to the knoppmyth box. Everything is OK execpt when the x50 pvr cards are recording, I then get sound skips and possibly video 'blips'.

I think the latency settings are a bit weird on my box...

Quote:
0000:00:05.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation CK8S Ethernet Controller (rev a2)
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16

0000:00:08.0 IDE interface: nVidia Corporation CK8S Parallel ATA Controller (v2.5) (rev a2) (prog-if 8a [Master SecP PriP])
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0

0000:02:06.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 128, IRQ 19

0000:02:07.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc iTVC16 (CX23416) MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 128, IRQ 20

0000:02:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 07)
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 128, IRQ 18

If I am reading the correctly then a latency of 0 means the PCI gives up the bus immediately, I think the ethernet card should have a higher Latency and possibly everything else should be a lower.
I also wonder if the pata controller having a 0 could be contributing to my pata issues, mibd you I have not had any since I altered the CAS/RAS settings.

Any ideas?

I would say to look at your IRQ usage. See what IRQ's are being shared.
Sometimes moving a card to a different slot can make big difference performance wise.

ALso, you might try going into bios and disable APCI sometimes callled APIC. This also is a thorn in the side at times.

Ta,

No IRQ sharing, I haven't tried the APCI route yet.

But it crashed this morning, it was up for 8 days though, that is a record.
Not sure why it crashed, it wasn't doing any playing/recording and I can't see anything in the logs at that time.

New thread for oops coing up
