Ever since I did auto-install to .19 my system locks up when X starts. Most of the time it will not even start fluxbox, just an X or an arrow on the screen. Once in a while it will start X to the fluxbox screen, with the terminal open for root password to setup mythtv, and within a screen or two it will lock up. hard lockup, no keypresses, however I can move the mouse around. The terminal screen gets a black box in it.
The only thing I can think of is that the initial install runs through some sort of NVidia-driver install sequence. That is the only thing that I can think of that would cause this. I have no idea how to remove or NOT have this nvidia script run. I have a feeling it is loading a newer driver that my legacy Nvidia card cannot handle.
Anyone have any ideas if this is the cause and how to fix it? I am totally at a loss. EDIT: I am sure this is the card and/or driver. My MB has a built in video and if I disable the AGP slot and use the built in video everything works fine.
Could it be the driver that was initally installed/loaded during setup?

Well first off. i have used many mx440's so im not sure why that would cause an issue.. but to answer your question about disabling the script.. i would just boot off the knoppmyth install CD and mount your hard drive.. then just edit the /etc/X11/XF86config-4 file and change it from:
driver "nvidia" TO driver "nv"
then reboot and it wont use the nvidia driver.. but like i said.. a mx440 should work perfect.. im using a mx4000, which is a 440 basicly.. the only way i have seen to hard lock X was with older nvidia drivers (maybe new ones too) Option renderaccel "true" would cause TOTAL hardlocks on many/all systems. no idea if this is fixed or not.. i just dont use it anymore.

A bad XF86Config-4 is the most likely cause.

There are TroubleShooting pages on the wiki which should help you look into this problem. I'd start with the X logfile to see what errors it's reporting... http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=CheckingLogFiles This is probably relevant too... http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenAfterInstall
