Post subject:  HDTV Tearing - Why is it not the same for every channel?

All,

I have been playing with getting the correct settings down for viewing live hdtv. I notice some tearing, but it doesn't appear to be the same for all channels. Currently, when I view any sports, I get a great amount of tearing . HBO HD, or any premium channel like that, all appear fine. ABC: good, NBC: bad, CBS: bad, FOX: Some Good, Some Bad. When I view the recorded content, however, I do not see any of this (tv or video), or do I see it when watching a DVD.

My system should be powerful enough to handle live HDTV:
AMD 64 3200
1GB RAM
250 GB HD
ASUS GeForce 6200T

I am running R5B7 and connecting over firewire to a motorola dct-6200.

Has anyone else experienced this? If you have resolved it, would you mind sharing your settings?

Currently, I am not De-interlacing the vidoe as this proves to be the best for me.

Thanks.

I don't have much experience with HD signals (and I am in Australia, so our HD transmissions are different), but I think you will find different channels, and different material, uses different bitrates. e.g. Sports may be 15Mb/s 720p, a movie may be 10Mb/s 1080i
If you have a look at your recordings, you should be able to roughly work out the rate from the number of GB/hour.

I suspect that your machine is fast enough to play this material back from a hard disk, but not fast enough to be reading the data from FireWire plus writing it to hard disk plus playing it back from the same disk.

Have a look in this forum's DTV topic for more information.

Be thankful you can playback HD. None of my computers are fast enough :-(

I thought tearing normally occurs when the refresh rate of your source doesn't match the refresh rate of your display?

Or the player is unable to maintain a constant framerate.

dmfrey: What connection are you using for your HDTV? DVI/VGA? Have you tried setting different output resolution for the different channels? I think you car causing mythTV to resize some recordings to match your output resolution and the extra CPU power required for the resize causes tearing.

ryanpatterson: I am using the DVI out with a DVI-HDMI cable to the TV. The TV is a Toshiba 56MX195. I am not sure how to set the different output for the different channels. I will look through the menus and what I can find. Could you post some information on that for me?

One thing I am going to try is to be sure the dct-6200 is set to, for instance, 1080i and that the TVOutput is also set to HD1080i. Right now, I do not think they are in sync. If I am going completely in the wrong direction here, please let me know.
