Subtree checking is a security thing. It makes sure that nothing within the exported and nfs mounted directory tree points outside of it. Basically it keeps remote users from accessing thing in the same file system (read partition or volume) but what should be an invisible part of it.

The problem they're talking about here are the opposite. With two file systems mounted in the same directory tree...
