I decided I really needed the new program listings, and really didn't need any of my old recorded content, so did a fresh-n-clean install of R5F27... seems to work OK, but the interface was a lot more "sluggish" than before, with some very faint (VERY faint) stuttering on playback.
Then I noticed that I was no longer seeing the "nVidia" splash screen on boot, and the X gray screen was a little buzzy, too... and realized also that I *had* been using the "OpenGL" setting checked in the Preferences. So I rechecked it.
And restarted.
Now, it starts into X, then when the frontend starts, goes right to a black screen.
Obviously, I can't really "change it back" inside the interface, if I can't *see* the interface.....
So I assume this preference is stored in a text file somewhere, but where? How do I change it back?
And where'd NVidia go? Was working OK before, seems like a risky thing to have to go experimenting around with settings again to find the magic combo.
Setup:
MB: Intel DG965WH
CPU: P4 3.2 Ghz
RAM: 1Gig
Vid: Fanless ... oh, crap I lost the box... 5200 something I think...

Where did you check it? If it's in the MythTV UI it's probably in settings table in the DB. The easiest way to change that is using MythWeb.
If you made a change via the nvidia-settings utility it's in /home/mythtv/.nvidia-settings-rc file.

That's it. In the GUI. I looked at Mythweb, and I think I found the entry, called "ThemePainter"... right now it says "opengl"... the problem is, I don't know what valid alternative values are (I was hoping it would be drop down, like it was in the UI.
Any ideas?
Thanks, by the way, for responding the first time. Getting close!

That did it!
Went back to the GUI and restarted Frontend, and it's alive!
I guess I shouldn't try to make "perfect" the enemy of "good"... it works, just not as snappy as it had before. (kind of a 1 second delay before hitting an arrow key and the next menu getting the focus, for example).
I'll take "working" anyday!
Thanks, all, for the help.

Double-check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to be sure you are using the nvidia driver (not nv or vesa or ...). dvanbrunt wrote: I guess I shouldn't try to make "perfect" the enemy of "good"... it works, just not as snappy as it had before. There have been a number of posts regarding sluggish remote response, a search should lead you to them.

Hey, thanks for ALL those pointers, esp. the "Don't Panic" post... a huge resource, would've been nice to have that linked on the page to download the new version for those of use who are ... thick.
Working great now. Fantastic. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
