hi, I have the same problem with the sound.

When I watch a movie (mplayer, xine), I can change the volume qithout problems. But when I'm watching TV and I hit the volume change buttons (remote and keyboad) I see a meter come up and the bar changes. But wether it's set to 0 or 100, it doesn't make any difference in the volume.

When I change from "Master" to "PCM" is still the same problem.

Thanks for help.

-chuckle- Mine's the opposite. :) Recordings and music change volume correctly(now that I changed it to Master), but changing the video volume doesn't do anything.

I'm having the same problem. I've got a pver-350 card and I've tried switching between mixer and master and neither affect anything.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have the same problem while watching live/recorded tv. I think the issue is stemming from the fact that when I run alsamixer, I don't see a 'master' or 'pcm'. Sound is being controlled by the 'Analog Front' mixer.

Is there any way to set mythtv to change this or link master or pcm to it?

The master setting is in the myth menu's, not alsamixer. I forget exactly where, however.

And I think my video volume works now that I'm running R5E50, but I'd have to double check. I haven't watched many videos lately.

I know where to set what mythtv controls (master vs pcm), but I don't have a master channel associated w/ my soundcard, and pcm does nothing. The only channel with any control is the 'Analog Front'.

Hello I have R5F1 installed and AC'97 onboard, I can play music and wacth DVD-AVI correctly, but in LiveTV or recording audio is very poor. With alsamixer I can't control PCM. allways 100% and very poor sound. With mythtv properties I can modify PCM and master but sound is poor too. I change to SoundBlaster pci and now I can modify PCM with alsamixer and liveTV and recording is very well.
I think the problem is AC97 onboard.

Can someone tell me if AC97 works well?

Thanks.

I decided to start attacking this problem again. I updated alsa to a newer version, and still no luck

when I run alsaconf, I get the following:

Code:
Setting default volumes...
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0

amixer: Unable to find simple control 'PCM',0

Which explains why I can't use mythtv to change my volumes.

Any suggestions?

Its a SB Live card[/quote]

Welp, I changed the settings so the buttons control the master volume instead of the PCM an' that works. But it's weird because the PCM volume setting doesn't do anything. No matter where it's set, nothing changes. Anybody else seen that?

I had the same problem, did this, and it fixed it for me as well. I'm using a Compaq mainboard, no idea what audio chip is on it. I didn't see a clue in dmesg as to what chip it was using.

I have the same issue but none of this fixes it.

I have an Nforce2 chipset motherboard with onboard AC97 audio. I've tried everything. I've tried setting the sound options in Gnome to use OSS, ALSA, "Autodetect", and "nVidia nForce." Same deal no matter what I use.

i've tried typing "ALSA:default" and tried selecting /dev/dsp in MythTV sound options. I've tried setting MythTV to control Master and tried PCM. I've tried setting the mixer device to /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1, and typing "default" to no avail.

No matter what combination of options I use, the sound always works but it always stays at the same volume. Doesn't matter if I use the remote or the keyboard.

Interestingly, this wasn't an issue for me when I built MythTV myself under Ubuntu, but I had other issues with Ubuntu so I wanted to try something else. I tried Mythdora first, but I also had the exact same issue under that, which is why I scrapped that and tried KnoppMyth.

At this point I will take any solution that doesn't require me to walk across the room and turn the speakers up and down manually. It's driving me crazy.
