I just finished installing KnoppMyth R5E50 on an old Compaq with an Intel board and PIII with a Hauppauge Freestyle and an Nvidia MX 4000.

Installation was quite easier than I expected but I now need some help with configuring. First off, I installed KnoppMyth while the machine was hooked up to my 19" Viewsonic monitor and NOT my TV. I did this mainly because I read that you had to edit a config file to change the refresh rate and I didn't know how to do this and didn't want to harm my TV. So is that all I need to change before I hook it up to my TV?

Also confused on how to hook up to my television. My tv has composite video and S-video. the graphics card has s-video as well. not sure what the freestyle has and I'm at work so atm I cannot check. But can someone give me a run down of how it should be configured? Coax -> freestyle
then s-video(graph card) -> s-video (tv) ? this sound about right? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest using R5F27 as that is the most current and if you decide in the future to sign up for Schedules Direct it will support it. It also has better equipment support.

I am not familiar with the Freestyle or the MX 4000. I have an FX5200 with svideo out on r5f27. I, too, did all the setup with a computer monitor connected. All that was needed for me to switch to using the TV, was to shut down, disconnect the computer monitor, connect the TV to the svideo out, and turn on the computer. The Nvidia FX5200 card sensed the TV and did all the proper conversions to make the svideo-out work properly. I never had to modify any config files to get the tv working. Be sure and disconnect the comp monitor as that seems to take precedence when it is connected. In R5F27 you can make the change just by doing a cntl-alt-backspace (after switching the cables, of course), that restarts something, I forget what it's called now, used to be gdm.

Switching from a monitor to a TV can be either extremely easy or very painful, depending on how you installed and how fussy your TV is, however, trying to get the TV working with the monitor still attached is major work. Definitely follow jzigmyth's advice on that count. Installing with the "tv" option as described in the hints tends to make life easier since it limits the resolutions used by X to ones which work with most TVs. I strongly recommend limiting it still further to only 640x480 (for NTSC) since this is a more natural match for the NTSC timings and prevents scaling artifacts. Also prefer the S-Video to the Composite since again it will give you better quality output.
