Hi,

I just bought my new Shuttle XPC SN68PTG5

http://eu.shuttle.com/de/DesktopDefault.aspx/searchcall-12/searchcategory-289/noblendout-1/tabid-72/170_read-14269/

and wanted to install R5F27 on it. My problem is, that I don't get my network running and so I can't update my NVIDIA graphics driver :( But I have to update them to get X working...

ifconfig tells me

Code:
eth0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-30-1B-BC-00-00-43-B9- .....

dmesg | grep eth gives me

Code:
forcedeth.c: Reverse Engeneered nForce ethernet driver. Version 0.56
eth1394: eth0: IEEE-1394 IPv4 over 1394 Ethernet (fw-host0)

Could the firewire-part be the problem?

If I boot with an OpenSuse 10.3 LiveCD, I have my network running out of the box with eth0 recognized as ether.

I googled for about 5 hours now and tried a lot. The most interesting I found was this post

http://www.knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16372

I read a lot about forcedeth now and I think, the version included in R5F27 is too old for my Shuttle. I have no opinion how to update forcedeth or anything else at the moment, I am a little frustrated at the moment ;)

Is there anybody who got this chipset working with KnoppMyth or has anybody an idea what I could try / do ?

I am so frustrated, I will take the TV Tuner Card, my DVD and my harddisk back to my Pundit now, reinstall my old image (thank god i did one before with a running R5D1!!), take a few beers and try again tomorrow.

I hope, you can help me, I HAVE to get this thing done, this Shuttle is such a great machine!! ;)

Thanks a lot...

Greetings, Jan

/beer

Hi,

If you run netcardconfig does it show two eth_ ? On my Compaq it thinks the firewire is eth0 but the onboard actually works as eth1.

You should be able to set the driver in xorg.conf to use vesa to at least get the xserver running. Then you can work on the proper driver.

No, netcardconfig only shows one eth0, it starts DHCP with it and doesn't get an offer. Even when I give it a fixed IP, Ethernet doesn't work :(

I'll wait for Cecil's newer release and if that doesn't work, I'll try the vesa part. Even if the box is still offline then :(

Beer and my pundit helped to get me out of frustration ;)

You need version 2.6.20+ kernel from what I've found. I just got an Abit AN-M2HD that has the same chipsets. You could try to recompile your R5F27 kernel to the most recent stable from kernel.org (2.6.23 as of the moment) or just wait.

I really would ... if I could ... but I'm frightened of touching the kernel ;) I once did ... and my system died ...

Is there a Howto somewhere? ;)

Google is your friend ;) Since R5F27 is based on debian, you may want to try searching for "the debian way" to recompile the kernel. Debian has tools that "make it easier." I've done it only a few times myself. Sometimes successfully, other times, not so much. If you run a combined FE/BE, you may want to take Cecil up on his offer of testing a beta version of the next release. That would probably be easiest.

I already PM'd cecil for the beta release. But if that doesn't work, I'll recompile ;)

Thanks for the help!

I love VMWare ;) I am compiling in a virtual Knoppmyth-installation, so I can try how to do it first. I found a short howto at http://www.falkotimme.com/howtos/debian_kernel2.6_compile/ that doesn't sound that hard...

Allright, the compiling intself worked using the HOWTO mentioned above. I installed 2.6.23.12 in my VM, but I get

Code:
kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1)

when trying to boot the new kernel image.

I added

Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.23.12
label=New
initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.23.12
read-only

to my /etc/lilo.conf and ran lilo without errors.

Booting with the old kernel is OK, but the new one dies only giving me this error...

Any idea?

Allright, I don't know why, but now the kernel is running. I compiled it another time and now it's booting...??

During the boot proccess there are some errors like

Code:
modprobe: FATAL: module raid0 not found

and lirc is reporting that it can't find the required kernel modules, I should install lirc-module-source to build kernel support for my hardware...

Is there a possibility like "Take all moduls and recompile them!" ? ;)

I dunno about the debian way for building kernel/modules etc but these commands build and install the kernel modules:

cd /usr/src/linux
make modules
make modules_install
