I'm trying to update my ALSA drivers and its become quite a nightmare. The knoppmyth drivers don't seem to be in the correct place, and theres a multi-level set of scripts that insist on loading drivers from a knoppmyth specific directory. Is there a setting somewhere to allow the drivers to be loaded from the normal modules directory?

ALSA is compiled via the kernel. There is nothing KnoppMyth specific about the included ALSA. Any guide on ALSA on Debian should work the same for KnoppMyth.

Well the AlsA driver is located in the
/lib/modules/version/updates/alsa

directory while the kernel (and also the ALSA latest tarball) installs them in the

/lib/modules/version/kernel/sound

If you make install from the also package, it installs them in the "kernel" directory, but knoppmyth is still using the ones in updates.

The kernel in KnoppMyth is compiled the Debian way (makes a package), I'll investigate this further this evening...

I moved the alsa directory in /lib/modules/version/updates to my home directory to force my newly compiled alsa modules to get loaded.
