Hello,
Ever since switching to R5.5 the / file system (ext3) goes into read-only mode sometimes. This is the exact same hardware that I had been running all of my previous versions of KM on for the past few years. The previous two time this has happened during a recording. I am rebooting the PC now, but when it comes up I will check and see if it was recording at the time.
EDIT: Ok, I just rebooted (twice) and now my system is back up and running. Looking at log times, it looks like it switched to read-only last night at 9:45p. There were no recordings scheduled for this time. No that I think of it, we had just finished watching TV and I was working on one of my other frontends. I tried watching some shows, but it just failed. The screen would go black, and then drop back to the menu.
Now, looking back at the rrd graphs (pretty handy to show when the system wasn't functioning), this might be tied to each time I tried getting this particular FE working. I'll have to test this theory tonight.
Anyway, where else would I begin searching to find the reason for this?

Well, this happened again tonight at 8:23p and I wasn't even home. So, nothing to do with my other FE computer accessing the server. The BE was 23 minutes into recording something, though I have successfully recorded some shows recently. It does seem to do this during a recording though.
I'm recording something else now, so I'll see what happens.
EDIT: Didn't have to wait long. Five minutes later it happened again. And now I have confirmation that it is not the /myth partition, just my / partition. Maybe I'll just go back to R5F27. I didn't have any problems with that.
EDIT 2: Think it has anything to do with the fact that my SATA drive shows up as /dev/hda instead of /dev/sda in R5.5?

Back again,
My thought about the sda / hda got me thinking more. I went into the BIOS and saw my SATA controller was in "Legacy" mode. I switched it to "Native", but then my system wouldn't boot. When I booted off the R5.5 CD it saw the drive as sda. I tried modifying the fstab and lilo.conf to show sda instead of hda, but I still couldn't get it to boot. So I just reinstalled R5.5.
With that, it looks like things are working MUCH better than before. The install went about 5 times faster than the first time, and my play back is much better. There are a few items set to record tonight so I'll see how it goes, but I think that was the problem.

The root partition has "errors=remount-ro" in /etc/fstab. My wild guess
is that is related to what is happening.
It sounds like your ext3 root is getting corrupted. That makes me wonder
if you have hardware issues, maybe even heat related.

Well, now that I have switched my SATA controller to "Native" mode and completed the reinstall, everything is running as smoothly as it was in R5F27. Not sure why R5F27 worked fine with the SATA in "Legacy" mode but R5.5 doesn't, but at least for my main BE system everything is working fine.
As for my other FE system. That is a different question.

I came across this also. The only drive atached was an ancient 40GB Maxtor IDE -drive. But no amount of reboots fixed that. I had to re-install Knoppmyth to get it working.
But I know the reason, because I did it again: When watching live tv, I unplugged my USB tuner accidentally. Next time the same thing. However, I have also unplugged it succesfully while it was recording and while live tv was on (had to test it...)
